In Oktyabrsky District, travel ideas range from protected steppes and Orthodox architectural monuments to excursions on the Don. For your planning, it can help to choose a focus first: nature, history or outdoor activities.

Protected Areas and Steppe Landscapes

The district’s protected areas include “Dubrava imeni V. V. Dokuchaeva,” “Zolotye gorki” and “Persianovskaya step,” as well as “Ayutinskie sklony,” “Panskaya balka” and “Osipovskaya balka.” Plant species listed in the Red Book of Russia grow there and are used in the pharmaceutical industry. This natural setting is also home to a diverse range of animals and wildlife, as well as untouched areas of the original mixed-grass feather-grass steppe of the Azov region that have never been used for economic purposes.

Excursions and hikes are offered in the “Persianovskaya step” protected area. A plot of virgin land that has never been plowed preserves, through its vegetation, much of the steppe landscape of the Azov region. If you want to plan a specific excursion, check the current schedule before your trip. “Zolotye gorki” also has a historical connection: the protected area was established in the late 19th century.

Cossack Villages, Churches and Archaeological Routes

The “Svyatyni Pravoslaviya na Donu” route leads to 17th-century Orthodox cultural and architectural monuments in the Cossack villages of Krivyanskaya and Bessergenevskaya. The Church of St. Alexei in Bessergenevskaya was built around the time the village was founded. Bessergenevskaya is also one of the oldest settlements in the Lower Don region; it is considered as old as the Cossack villages of Razdorskaya and Starotscherkasskaya, and the towns of Aksay and Azov.

The educational route “Gorzhus toboy Donskoy Agrarnyy!” offers a different perspective on the region. It includes an introduction to the Don State Agrarian University (DonGAU) and its museums. Two other excursion routes explore archaeological themes: “Shepot tysyacheletiy” is located in the hamlet of Yagodinka, and “Stoyanka pervobytnogo cheloveka” in the hamlet of Shevchenko. The associated archaeological site lies on a steep slope, 250 meters from the southwestern edge of the hamlet of Shevchenko.

On the Rivers, on Horseback and Along the Don

Boat trips and motorboat excursions on the Aksay and Don rivers are organized from the Cossack village of Bessergenevskaya. Stops include “green rest areas.” If you want to plan a trip in advance, check the current schedule. Equestrian routes pass through the areas around the settlements of Krivyanskoye and Bessergenevskoye, as well as along the Don; alongside trips on the water, horseback routes are another option for an excursion.

The sandy banks of the Don near the hamlet of Kalinin offer opportunities for active recreation with family or on your own. This destination adds another way to spend time outdoors to the routes and natural areas, without requiring any particular activity. Which option suits your trip depends on whether you would rather plan hikes, explore cultural history or spend time by the river.

Local Traditions and Trip Planning

The “Step kovyl'naya” Cossack culture festival takes place annually in Oktyabrsky District. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the specific date in advance. Together with the historic Cossack villages, routes to architectural monuments and varied natural areas, the festival offers a cultural way to experience the district. When planning your hotel stay, it makes sense to first organize your preferred excursions and the possible festival date, then base your search for suitable accommodation on those plans.
