At Yoshkar Ser, natural forest trails cross wooded slopes; small clearings offer views of fields, meadows, and surrounding villages. The area is also home to a regionally significant natural monument and traces of Mari culture, both part of the Morkinskiy District travel experience.

Yoshkar Ser: Forest Trails and Landscape

Yoshkar Ser is in the northwestern part of Morkinskiy District, near the village of Nylkudo and about 23 kilometers from the settlement of Morki. The area is a natural monument of regional significance covering about 60 hectares. It was established to preserve its landscape, geological deposits, water network, and rare plants and animals. Yoshkar Ser can be translated as “Red Bank.”

Trails and streams run along the wooded slope of the Jurdur Heights in the Yoshkar Ser area. The ascent follows natural forest trails; small clearings offer views of fields, meadows, and surrounding villages. This natural area draws attention both to its woodland landscape and to the views of the surrounding cultural landscape.

Karman-Kuryk: Rock Formations and Karst

Near Abdaevo, Karman-Kuryk rises 224.2 meters above sea level. The hill is a low-mountain formation of the Vyatka-Mari Wall. Dolomite, limestone, marl, clay, and sandstone are exposed on its large northern and eastern slopes. The terrain also features karst formations; caves existed there in the past. In 1976, Karman-Kuryk was designated a state natural monument.

An ecological educational trail was developed at Karman-Kuryk for scientific and educational purposes, in collaboration with scientists and students from MarSU and MarSTU. Its 15 stations cover biology and ecology. The two natural areas have different features: forest trails, streams, and open views shape the Yoshkar Ser landscape, while Karman-Kuryk is characterized by rock outcrops and karst formations.

Mari Culture in Shorunzha

Shorunzha (Uncho) is one of the old settlements in Morkinskiy District. A sacred memorial stone to Onar stands in the village. Founded in 2015, the ethnocultural complex comprises a creative workshop and the museum and ethnographic complex “Starinnaya mariyskaya usadba” (“Old Mari Homestead”). The Old Mari Homestead has a practical side as well as its museum character.

Ritual festivals and events are held at the ethnocultural complex, including Shorykyol, Ăśarnya, Kugeche, Agavairem, Semyk, and SĂżrem. The memorial stone, workshop, homestead, and festival traditions showcase various aspects of cultural life in Shorunzha. If you would like to include a festival in your travel plans, check the specific event dates in advance.

Folklore and Museum

Ethnofolklore tourist routes lead to places associated with traditional folk art, folklore, customs, oral traditions, and songs in Shorunzha, Kutyuk-Kiner, Chavainur, and Chodrayal. The cultural offering therefore extends beyond festivals to include storytelling traditions and musical heritage.

The halls of the Sergey Grigoryevich Chavain Memorial House Museum in Chavainur contain more than 1,000 exhibits. These include collections related to his life, objects from the everyday life and culture of the Mari people, books, and paintings. Biographical items are displayed alongside everyday objects and works of art.

An Annual Mountain Race

Sports activities are also part of the district’s offerings: an annual mountain race takes place at Chukshinskaya Mountain, and both adults and children can participate. If you would like to include the race in your travel plans, check the specific event date in advance.
