In Mokshansky District, the range of themes extends from botanical natural landmarks and literary history to the memory of Mokshan Fortress. Other attractions include a sculpture park in Ramzay and an observation pavilion at the source of the Moksha River in Vyglyadovka. Each place and theme offers a different starting point for planning your trip.

Botanical Natural Landmarks

Four natural landmarks of regional significance have a botanical protection status. The Ramzaysky Reserve of Litvinov’s head-shaped clover covers 1.5 hectares, and the Ramzay Oak Forest covers 36 hectares. The Bolshoy Endovy Steppe measures 50 hectares, and the Belogorskaya Steppe measures 60 hectares. These figures help put the scale of the areas into perspective: the smallest is the Ramzaysky Reserve, and the largest is the Belogorskaya Steppe.

The names refer to different landscape types: a reserve, an oak forest and two steppes. If you are particularly interested in botanical protected areas, these differences can shape the nature-focused part of your trip.

Literature and Everyday Culture in Mokshan

The Literary and Memorial Museum of writer A. G. Malyshkin is located in the former home of the Malyshkin family. The exhibition hall is housed in a second building, the home of watchmaker Novitsky. The museum opened on March 21, 1977. The two houses give the site its distinctive layout: the family home and the exhibition hall are separate parts of the museum complex.

The bakery at the A. G. Malyshkin Museum displays everyday objects belonging to both ordinary and wealthy peasants, as well as the exhibition “Fair in a County Town.” It also hosts theatrical events, fairs featuring Petrushka, culinary workshops and quest tours exploring Russian everyday culture from the 19th to the early 20th century. Check which of these activities are currently available before your trip.

Military History and the “Watchtower” Complex

The defensive rampart in Mokshan was part of the Penza Defensive Line and is a remnant of the wall of Mokshan Fortress, built in the 17th century. The fortress was constructed to protect the borders of the Russian state from nomads.

The “Watchtower” complex was built in 2023, replacing a wooden tower with a palisade that had been constructed almost 45 years earlier. Its facilities include an access area with a parking lot and a life-size model of a 17th-century watchtower from the Defensive Line. The model has an interior staircase and a section of palisade. The complex also includes an observation platform with ramps and steps, a modular toilet and a memorial stone. If you plan to use these facilities during your visit, check their current availability.

“Legend” Sculpture Park and the Source of the Moksha

More than 300 works made of metal, granite, wood and bronze are on display at “Legend” Sculpture Park in the village of Ramzay. The number of works may change. The park offers a distinctive attraction alongside Mokshan’s historical sites.

At the source of the Moksha River in Vyglyadovka, an observation pavilion offers a place to rest and view the source. Check the pavilion’s current condition before your visit. When choosing a theme for your trip, you can distinguish between the botanical protected areas, Malyshkin’s literary and everyday history, military history in Mokshan, and attractions in Ramzay and Vyglyadovka.
