Krasnoobsk combines its development as a science city with a forest park, distinctive residential architecture and cultural landmarks. This offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: nature and biodiversity, urban history, religious architecture and art. If you’re looking for a hotel in Krasnoobsk, you can first weigh up which side of the place you’d like to shape your stay.

Forest Park and Plant Life

The forest park named after Academician Irakli Ivanovich Sinyagin was established in the 1970s during the development of the science city; the initiative came from Sinyagin. The park was planted with 22 landscape stands and 205 landscape groups, comprising more than 80 tree and shrub species. The plant collection includes around 212 species. There are also numerous vertebrate and invertebrate animals, including species listed in regional and federal Red Books. Species inventories may change over time. The grounds thus combine a designed landscape with a diverse range of plant and animal life.

Church, Art and Grebennikov

The Church of St. Sergius and the Kazan Icon in Krasnoobsk stands out for its five domes, tent-shaped bell tower and Russian-Byzantine design. The upper church contains a faience iconostasis; the lower church is dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh. The two church spaces have distinct religious emphases: the faience iconostasis defines the upper space, while the lower church is dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh.

The sculpture “Flight of Thought” (“Polyot mysli”) depicts a flock of birds seemingly moving through a cloud in slow motion. It symbolizes the value and beauty of the moment. It was originally called “Wind” (“Veter”). The V. S. Grebennikov Museum of Agroecology and Environmental Protection was founded in 1976 by Viktor Stepanovich Grebennikov, a well-known animal painter, entomologist and author of several popular science books about insects. Grebennikov’s “Relict Steppe” spherorama recreates a first-person perspective and takes the viewing angle into account. The themes of animal painting and entomology thus sit alongside an installation in which perspective itself also plays a role.

City History and Leisure

Krasnoobsk began to take shape in 1970 as a research complex of the Siberian Branch of VASKhNIL (the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences). Among Krasnoobsk’s distinctive residential buildings are circular arrangements of eight-storey apartment blocks. Three residential rings of this kind were originally planned. The third ring was never built; ordinary rows of housing were constructed on the site earmarked for it. The residential buildings therefore have two distinguishing features: their eight-storey height and circular arrangement.

According to its description, the “Armada” sports and recreation complex in Krasnoobsk includes a swimming pool, a climbing wall and an aquathermal area. A neighboring building is said to house a wind tunnel and the artificial Fly Surf wave. If you’re planning to visit any of these sports facilities, check current visitor access in advance.
