There are several ways to explore Novosibirsk’s history: through the early railway, historic buildings and museums with very different collections. Art, natural history and technology offer additional focuses. The season also plays a role: the Mikhailovskaya Embankment features winter attractions and summer boat trips on the Ob.

City history and historic buildings

The Novosibirsk Museum of Local History is housed in the City Trade Building. This federal architectural monument was built in 1910–1911 by architect A. D. Kryachkov. The permanent exhibition “Siberia in Antiquity” explores the lifestyles and beliefs of Siberia’s Indigenous peoples. The city’s architectural history and the cultures of Siberia are presented as distinct topics.

Gorodskoye Nachalo Park is the historic place where Novosibirsk began as Novo-Nikolayevsk. An original yoke from the first railway bridge over the Ob is on display there. The bridge served for more than 90 years, until 1991. This surviving component makes the history of the railway tangible through a specific object.

The Museum “Office of Engineer G. M. Budagov” on Bolshevistskaya Street is a small wooden house and one of the city’s most important historic buildings. Visitors can stroll among houses from old Novo-Nikolayevsk, learn about the work and leisure of bridge-building engineers, and take part in a workshop on the basics of court etiquette. Sounds from the 19th century are also introduced, with the symphonion and gramophone compared. Check the museum’s current arrangements before visiting.

The Ascension Cathedral offers another historic architectural detail: it was initially built of wood in 1912–1913. The galleries of the Novosibirsk State Art Museum first opened to visitors in late December 1958.

Art, natural history and technology

The Novosibirsk State Art Museum comprises more than 12,000 works of Russian and Western European painting, graphic art, sculpture and applied art from the 16th to the 21st century. A substantial part of the collection is on permanent display. The collection thus brings together different art forms and several centuries; individual holdings may change.

The Museum of the Sun permanently displays historical reconstructions depicting life in Ancient Egypt, Indochina and North America. It also features objects and clothing of the Incas, Aztecs and ancient Slavs. The Natural History Museum’s science exhibition comprises more than 1,500 exhibits, including the complete skeleton of Matilda, a female mammoth, and the skeleton of a woolly rhinoceros. Those interested in historical cultures or natural history will find a wide variety of topics across the city’s museums.

The Novosibirsk Railway Technology Museum consists of several tracks with exhibits. Its collection includes more than 100 items, including steam, diesel and electric locomotives dating from the late 19th century onward. The range therefore extends from early machines to different types of propulsion.

Architecture, music and performing arts

The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre building is considered the most important architectural landmark of the capital of Siberia. The Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, known as NOVAT for short, is Russia’s largest music theatre. The Philharmonic also offers a variety of cultural programming: alongside the Academic Symphony Orchestra, it is home to 19 ensembles. Their programmes cover classical music, jazz, pop, folklore, and music and literature; there are also educational programmes for adults and children.

Zoo and seasonal activities

The Novosibirsk Zoo is home primarily to mammals; birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates are also kept in separate buildings and enclosures. A dedicated pavilion houses an aquarium enclosure with Humboldt penguins. Polar bears live in an outdoor enclosure with a pool and, according to the description, attract particularly large numbers of visitors. Check the zoo’s current visitor regulations before your visit.

The Novosibirsk Children’s Railway operates seasonally on a 5.3-kilometre narrow-gauge line through the forest between Zaeltsovsky Park and the zoo, stopping at several stations. The route thus connects two named places via a dedicated forest railway; services are seasonal.

Around New Year, the Mikhailovskaya Embankment becomes the city’s main entertainment venue each year. An ice town with slides and an ice rink is built in the park; the specific attractions may vary from year to year. In summer, excursion boats depart from the river station pier at the end of the embankment. River trams also operate in summer, with or without an excursion. Timetables and availability may vary; check current operations before your trip.

Some trips from the embankment travel to Korablik Island, located in the wider regional area. Passengers can spend a few hours there and return to shore on a later boat. Check current routes and operations in advance. The seasonal options on the Ob therefore differ: the ice town is a New Year attraction, while boat trips and river trams operate in summer.
