In Volodarskiy District, monasteries, historic sites and a natural monument tell different stories about the area. The range extends from the Florishcheva Hermitage and the ruins of merchant Bashkirov’s manor house to the landscapes along the Oka River. Traces of mills and the offerings of the Volodarskiy Museum Center also provide ideas for planning your trip.

Monastic History and Culture

The Holy Dormition Florishcheva Hermitage is a men’s monastery in the village of Florishchi, on Florishcheva Krasnaya Gora hill. The monk Methodius founded the monastery in the mid-17th century on Florishcheva Hill. The site is therefore associated with a specific foundation story and a named landscape feature.

The church in Myachkovo also has a historical connection: it was built in the early 20th century in the Russian style with eclectic elements. The site was previously home to the Vasilyevsky Monastery, founded in 1352. For those interested in culture, two distinct periods are central here: the founding of the former monastery and the church’s later architectural history.

The Volodarskiy Museum Center organizes themed events and offers master classes. When planning a visit, it is worth checking the current program for specific dates.

Manor House Ruins and Industrial History

The manor complex of merchant Bashkirov in Krasnaya Gorka dates from the 1860s and is in poor condition. It is located in a pine forest. Remains of the main house and ice cellar survive; the water tower is best preserved.

The Bugrov mills in Seyma are part of the area’s industrial history; their construction began in the 1860s. Another building complex in the area of the Peredelnovskaya Mill was built by the beginning of the 20th century. The industrial and administrative buildings are generally well preserved and now serve as an administrative center. This well-preserved complex, now used as an administrative center, stands in clear contrast to the dilapidated Bashkirov manor.

The Chernorechye Natural Monument and Activities

The Chernorechye Natural Monument extends across the settlements of Zhelnino, Pushkino and Seyma in Volodarskiy District. Pine forests, meadows and the banks of the Oka shape the landscape. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the area was a popular retreat for the intelligentsia; Gorky and Korolenko praised its scenic beauty.

The Garmoniya Equestrian Club offers riding lessons for children and adults.

Cultural Context: Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast also offers a distinctive regional cultural context. The Museum of the Russian Patriarchate in Arzamas focuses on Patriarchs Nikon and Sergius, as well as Alexius I, Pimen, Alexius II and Kirill. The exhibition features original objects and modern reconstructions. A general guided tour covers the history of the Russian Patriarchate from its beginnings to the present day, as well as the lives and spiritual development of the patriarchs.

Gorodets has a museum quarter in its historic center. The local history museum covers topics including the town’s history, Old Belief, Orthodoxy, crafts and merchant life. Gorodets has been known for printed gingerbread and wooden shipbuilding since the late 18th century. These regional cultural themes complement the sights and landscapes of Volodarskiy District without being equated with them.
