Lipetskiy rayon: Nature, Churches and Crafts
Accommodation in Lipetskiy rayon
Rare plants in the Berezki tract, churches with different building histories, and the Romanov toy-making craft give Lipetskiy rayon a variety of natural and cultural points of interest. The places mentioned differ in their focus: in the landscape, protected areas and a lake stand out, while the churches are distinguished by their construction periods, architecture and state of preservation. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider whether nature, architecture or crafts are of particular interest to you on your trip.
Nature in Lipetskiy rayon
The Galichya Gora State Nature Reserve covers 234.4 hectares. The 2-hectare Berezki tract is located in Lipetskiy rayon and is part of the reserve; rare plant species grow there. The Donskoy protected area and Lake Kolovetnoye are also among the district’s natural areas that attract tourist interest. These represent different aspects of nature: a tract with rare plants, a protected area and a lake.
Churches and Building History
The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Znamenie” in Veshalovka features pseudo-Gothic forms. It was built between 1768 and 1794 and was part of the estate complex of J. A. Tatishchev and, later, the noble Kozhin family. The design is believed to have been by Vasily Bazhenov. The style, construction period and connection to the estate complex each give the church a distinct historical significance; the attribution of the design is explicitly a supposition.
The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Nikolskoye offers a different picture of building history. It was a wooden structure dating from the mid-18th century, built without a single nail. Only the bell tower of the church remains. The Church of the Nativity of Christ in Verbilovo is another example: it was built between 1818 and 1827 and is a regionally significant cultural heritage site. The three churches therefore differ not only in their construction periods, but also in their surviving characteristics: pseudo-Gothic forms in Veshalovka, a nail-free wooden structure and a surviving bell tower in Nikolskoye, and designated cultural heritage status in Verbilovo.
Romanov Toy-Making Craft
The Romanov toy-making craft originated in the 17th century in the village of Romanovo, later called Romanov-v-Step and now known as Lenino. Originally, it was closely associated with pagan gods and symbols. The center of Romanov toy art is in the village of Troitskoye in Lipetskiy District, Lipetsk Oblast.
Context in Lipetsk Oblast
The wider landscape of Lipetsk Oblast also offers natural history attractions. The Galichya Gora Nature Reserve protects characteristic forest-steppe communities and groups of rock-dwelling plants on Devonian limestone outcrops in the valleys of the Don, Bystraya Sosna and their tributaries. It consists of six separate sections surrounded by developed and cultivated land. Galichya Gora was the first nature reserve in the Central Black Earth Region and is among the smallest nature reserves in the world.
The Lipetsk Regional Museum of Natural History is located on the reserve’s central estate and is visited by thousands of day-trippers each year. The museum’s open-air area includes an alpine plant collection with rare plant species, a breeding station for birds of prey and a medicinal herb garden. Check current visitor access before your trip. The Galichya Gora Nature Reserve and the Lipetsk Regional Museum of Natural History are located in Lipetsk Oblast.
