Near Toksovo, Vsevolozhsky District reveals its nature-focused side, while the country estates of Priyutino and Bogoslovka offer different highlights. The Malinovaya Gora Ecological Trail winds through forest and kame terrain and is designated for several activities. In Priyutino, an English-style park with a pond and the estate’s history of ownership define the place; Bogoslovka focuses on the wooden architecture of northwestern Russia. These differences can help you decide whether to focus your trip on landscapes or architectural history.

Hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing near Toksovo

The 2.3-kilometer Malinovaya Gora Ecological Trail is located within the Toksovo urban area, south of Lake Kavgolovskoye in Toksovskiy Nature Park. It is designated for hiking, cycling and skiing. Most of the route passes through spruce forest and traverses the kame terrain in the southern part of the Karelian Isthmus. This landscape includes habitats in coniferous forests, raised and transitional bogs, and bodies of water. The trail description thus links a specific route with a variety of landscape features.

When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish the trail’s designated uses from its seasonal preparation. In winter, enthusiasts prepare part of the trail as a cross-country ski track for classic technique. Whether this preparation takes place depends on conditions and volunteer activity. Hiking and cycling are also designated uses of the trail; the ski track, however, covers only part of the route and depends on winter conditions.

Priyutino and Bogoslovka: Park Design and Architectural History

The main buildings of the Priyutino estate are set in an English-style park with a pond. The Priyutino Museum is located on the estate, which belonged to Alexei Nikolayevich Olenin until 1841. The park and the history of ownership offer two distinct ways to explore the site: its landscape design and its historical connection to Olenin.

The Bogoslovka Estate Museum focuses on the wooden architecture of northwestern Russia from the 16th to the 18th century. The estate’s ethnographic ensemble was restored to its original form in 2004. It includes accurate replicas of historic buildings, including religious and residential buildings, enclosures and fortifications. Bogoslovka thus brings together a clearly defined museum subject and the forms of historic architecture.

The two estates differ clearly in what they offer visitors: Priyutino is characterized by its park, pond and history of ownership up to 1841; Bogoslovka by its museum theme and reconstructed architectural forms. If you are weighing landscape design against architectural history, the two sites offer distinct focuses.

A regional perspective on nature: Leningrad Oblast

Beyond the district, Leningrad Oblast offers other distinctive landscapes. Veps Forest Nature Park lies in the far east of the oblast and includes seven nature reserves with particularly strict protections. The park has numerous lakes; the largest is Lake Lerinskoye, in the reserve of the same name. Old spruce and pine forests have been preserved in the Vepsskiy Les and Ashchozyorskiy reserves. They are important for numerous organisms that can survive only in forests undisturbed by economic activity.

Cultural and natural features are also part of this broader regional picture. The Veps, a small people of Russia with their own culture and traditions, have traditionally lived in Veps Forest Nature Park. Brown bears are relatively numerous there; the wolverine, which is extremely rare in the region, has also been recorded. The nature park thus broadens the perspective on Leningrad Oblast to include forest conservation, lake landscapes, wildlife and Veps culture.
