Kurgan: In the Footsteps of the Decembrists
Accommodation in Kurgan
Kurgan is best explored through its Decembrist history and historic urban landscape. House museums tell stories of life, exile, and family; routes, architecture, and exhibitions offer further perspectives on the city.
The Decembrists in Kurgan
The V. K. Küchelbecker House Museum is dedicated to the Decembrist poet and friend of Pushkin, and is considered the only museum of its kind in Russia. Its exhibition covers Küchelbecker’s childhood, his education at the Lyceum, his involvement in the uprising, his exile, and his family’s life. The building is an exact replica of the house where he lived in Kurgan in 1845–1846. A visit therefore focuses on personal milestones and the history of the Decembrists.
The Decembrist House Museum opened on December 10, 1975. It is located in the historic part of Kurgan, in a townhouse built in the late 18th century. Its collection includes more than 800 original exhibits: personal belongings of the Decembrists, historical documents, and objects from the 19th century. In the courtyard stand a monument to M. M. Naryshkin and an oak described as a descendant of the 400-year-old “Dub Ujedinennyj” in the Trigorsky Park of the Pushkin Museum-Reserve.
The museum also houses a ZKP-1 (“Malyj Zeiss”) optomechanical planetarium made by “Carl Zeiss Jena” in the 1970s. Along with the historical documents and personal belongings, it broadens the museum’s subject matter with a technical exhibit.
Architecture and historic cityscapes
The architectural ensemble of the central square was created in the 1950s based on designs by architects from Leningrad. Kurgan’s city center also features historical and architectural monuments dating from the 18th to the 20th centuries, including merchants’ houses and estates, as well as examples of wooden architecture. These monuments include the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky. The different periods and styles of construction provide a visible architectural framework for the city’s history.
Routes and places of the city’s history
The Tsarevo Gorodishche Park cultural and historical complex was created in 2013 to commemorate the first settlement. Sloboda Tsarevo Gorodishche was the city of Kurgan’s first name. The park’s watchtower houses an exhibition about the exploration of the southern Trans-Urals, the founding of Tsarevo Gorodishche, and excavations at the Tsarev Kurgan burial mound. Historical tours are held in the park.
Kurgan’s historic urban landscape can also be explored on foot: “Krasnaya Liniya Kurgana” is a special walking route through the historic center. Smartphone and tablet users can listen to a personal audio tour using the mobile guide. The Tourism and Information Center develops and runs city walks, including overview tours and themed routes covering literary sites, monuments to military glory, and places connected with the Decembrists’ time in the city. The “Lyubimyy Gorod” route received the Grand Prix of the Russian tourism award “Marshrut Goda.”
The “Lyubimyy Gorod” bus tour includes a visit to the “Tsarevo Gorodishche Park” cultural and historical complex. If you plan to take this tour, check the latest dates before your trip.
Cultural venues
Kurgan has a local history museum, an art museum, a cultural and exhibition center, and a regional philharmonic. The city’s theaters include the Kurgan State Drama Theater and the “Gulliver” Puppet Theater. These institutions complement the historic houses and urban landscape with additional cultural attractions.
In the wider destination of Kurgan Oblast
Outside the city of Kurgan, the wider destination of Kurgan Oblast offers its own themes. Founded in 1644, the Dalmatov Monastery ensemble is considered the earliest stone monastery in the Urals and Siberia. At the Savin sanctuary, also known as Trans-Ural Stonehenge, the focus is on an ancient observatory dating from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC and its status as a cultural heritage site of federal significance. The Ryabinovy Dol eco-trail offers another perspective on the region: it leads through a pine forest with rowan undergrowth, a plant community rarely found in the forest-steppe zone. The range of themes in Kurgan Oblast thus extends from monastic history and archaeology to landscapes and nature.
