Nerekhtsky District: Monastery History in Troitsa
Accommodation in Nerekhtsky District
The Troitsa-Sypanovsky Monastery Complex in the village of Troitsa is a cultural and historical point of interest for a stay in Nerekhtsky District. Its buildings and the history associated with Pachomius of Nerekhta offer insights into different periods of monastic life. Kostroma Oblast also offers other nature and cultural themes to consider when planning a trip.
Monastery Complex and History in Troitsa
The Troitsa-Sypanovsky Monastery Complex includes a church, an enclosure, towers, and a Trinity Church dating from 1722. A visit to the site can be linked to its history: with the support of Nerekhta residents, Pachomius of Nerekhta built a wooden Church of the Life-Giving Trinity here around 1365–1378.
In 1675–1676, a stone Trinity Church was built in place of the monastery’s wooden church. On May 6, 1675, Pachomius’s relics were found during excavations beneath the altar of the former church. The building history and the discovery are therefore specific historical points of reference for the monastery complex.
The holy relics of Pachomius, the wonder-working Vladimir-Nerekhta Icon of the Mother of God, and the holy spring of Pachomius are among the holy objects of the Troitsa-Sypanovsky Pachomius of Nerekhta Convent. They complement the architectural and chronological context with religious points of reference associated with the monastery.
Nature and Culture in Kostroma Oblast
For a broader look at Kostroma Oblast, there are nature and cultural destinations, each with its own focus. The Kologrivsky Les State Nature Reserve comprises two sections that preserve different landscapes of the southern taiga, with zonal and provincial physical-geographical characteristics. The “Journey into the Protected Forest” tour includes the ecological trail of the same name, which passes through a section of old southern taiga forest. Check the current visitor conditions for the tour before making plans.
Another destination is Shchelykovo, the country estate of Russian playwright Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky in Kostroma Oblast. Tours of the park and A. N. Ostrovsky’s house are scheduled for 10:00, 11:30, 13:00, 14:30, and 15:30. They are available to groups of five or more, or can be arranged for a fee for five people. As the schedule may change, check the times in advance.
Museums and Susanin-Related Attractions
The Susanino Local History Museum explores the nature, archaeology, history, culture, and everyday life of the Susanino region in five halls, in that order. In its renewed exhibition, “At the Crossroads of History and Legend,” the museum preserves Ivan Susanin and Savrasov’s painting “The Rooks Have Arrived” as important motifs for the region. It also offers walking and bus excursions to places associated with Ivan Susanin, including the Isupovo Marsh and the villages of Derevenki and Domnino. Ask about the current excursion options before making plans.
In Kostroma, Kostromskaya Sloboda features historic wooden houses and churches, as well as ethnographic exhibitions about the lives of peasants in the Kostroma region. The permanent exhibition at the Museum of Nature contrasts present-day animals, birds, insects, and fungi with the paleontological past of the Kostroma land. The two museums thus offer different perspectives: one on historic architecture and ways of life, the other on nature and geological history.
The Museum of Dreams in Nerekhta tells the city’s history through the life stories of people who dared to dream big; original keepsakes bring their stories to life. This personal storytelling approach differs from the Susanino Local History Museum’s thematically arranged halls. When choosing cultural attractions, visitors can therefore weigh a biographical perspective against regional history and exhibitions on nature and peasant life.
