Pionerskiy: Sauna “Peklo” and landscapes in Kaliningrad Oblast

The Curonian Spit is a 98-kilometer-long, sandy peninsula, between 350 meters and 3.8 kilometers wide. As a natural barrier, it separates the salty Baltic Sea from the freshwater Curonian Lagoon. The transboundary Russian-Lithuanian World Heritage Site “Curonian Spit” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 in the “Cultural Landscape” category. The “Kurshskaya Kosa” National Park was established on the southern half of the spit on November 6, 1987, by Resolution No. 423. At that time, this area was administratively part of Zelenogradskiy District in the then Kaliningrad Region of the RSFSR.

The national park on the Russian part of the Curonian Spit has seven ecological educational trails and three tourist excursion routes. Six ecotrails are marked with kilometer points: “Korolevskiy bor” at kilometer 6, “Vysota Myullera” at kilometer 32, “Rossittenskiy les” at kilometer 33, “Tantsuyushchiy les” at kilometer 37, “Vysota Efa” at kilometer 42, and “Ozero Lebed” at kilometer 45. The trails are accessible around the clock and year-round; they may be temporarily closed due to weather or necessary restoration work. The kilometer points provide a reference to the respective locations along the spit. Check for current notices about possible closures before visiting.

A visit to the “Fringilla” ecotrail on the grounds of the “Rybachiy” Biological Station field station is possible from April to October only as part of a guided tour for a group of at least ten people. There are twelve stairway crossings to the Baltic Sea beach on the Russian part of the spit; each has a parking lot. This information helps distinguish two different aspects of the national park: access to the beach and a visit to the field station, which is explicitly restricted to guided groups.

The national park also has a visitor center. From May to September, it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. From October to April, it is open five days a week and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. As opening hours may change, it is advisable to confirm them with the park before your trip.

Distinctive landscapes and culture

The coniferous forest “Tantsuyushchiy les” on the Curonian Spit is known for its strangely zigzagging, twisted tree trunks. The ecotrail of the same name is at kilometer 37 of the spit, four kilometers north of the settlement of Rybachiy.

Another landscape of note in Kaliningrad Oblast is “Vishtynetskiy” National Park in the southeastern part of the region. It was established on April 1, 2024, by Government Resolution No. 412, based on the nature park of the same name, and covers more than 27,600 hectares. The extensive forests there are also known by the former names Rominten Forest and Red Forest. The park’s name refers to the nature park on which the national park was based; the forest names provide another historical designation for this landscape.

Amber is also part of the region’s cultural heritage: the “Yantarnyy zamok” museum and exhibition complex is located in the center of Yantarnyy in Kaliningrad Oblast. The “Istoriya dobychi yantarya” museum complex is located on the shore of “Sinyavinskogo” Lake in the Yantarnyy urban district. Both named museum complexes are located in the Yantarnyy urban district.
