More than 65 percent of the territory of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic is mountainous. The landscape and activities offer different focal points: in the high mountains, routes pass through a protected area; at the Elbrus resort, the slopes take center stage; and in Terskol, a museum is dedicated to the history of the battles for the Caucasus heights. Chegem Gorge and the Nalchik resort area are also among the Republic’s named destinations.

High Mountains, Rivers and Gorge

The Kabardino-Balkarian State High-Mountain Nature Reserve manages a protected area in the Cherek and Chegem districts. It extends along the Greater and Lateral Caucasus ranges and includes the headwaters of the Cherek-Balkarsky, Cherek-Bezengisky and Chegem rivers. Visitors interested in landscapes and nature observation will find a distinctive travel focus here: mountain ranges, river headwaters and designated routes shape the protected area in different ways.

In Chegem Gorge, the ravine narrows into a defile with steep walls up to 300 meters high. The Su-Auzu waterfall wall is a major attraction there. The Nalchik resort area is designated as a specially protected natural area. These two named areas represent nature themes different from the routes in the high-mountain reserve.

Routes and Seasonal Conditions

There are four tourist routes in the Kabardino-Balkarian State Nature Reserve: “Mizhirgi,” “Shaurtu,” “To the Bezengi Glacier” and “To the Narzan Mineral Spring.” The “Mizhirgi,” “Shaurtu” and “To the Narzan Mineral Spring” routes, as well as the “Zhiginzhi Waterfall” and “Bezengi Glacier” sections of the “To the Bezengi Glacier” route, are intended for visitors of different ages and operate from May to October. Before setting out, check the current route status and access conditions with the reserve.

The “To the Bezengi Glacier” hiking route is 26.1 kilometers long and takes three days. Its final section crosses the Bezengi Glacier, also known as Ullu-Chiran. This section has a difficulty rating of II and may only be traversed with a mountain guide. The “Bezengi Glacier – Lake Boran-Köl” section operates from July to August; check with the reserve in advance about any required permits as well.

The route offers the chance to experience the elevation zones, diverse landscapes, and flora and fauna of the Central Caucasus. Possible sightings include Caucasian tur, bearded vultures, griffon vultures, golden eagles and Caucasian black grouse; the flowering of Caucasian rhododendron is also among the natural features described. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

Elbrus Resort: Slopes and Mountain Station

The Elbrus ski area has 20 kilometers of slopes of varying difficulty and three gondola lifts. Its wide red, blue and green slopes are suitable for skiers and snowboarders of different ability levels. The availability of individual slopes may vary by season. If you are using the stated slope length to plan your trip, check the figure again before you travel.

An artificial snowmaking system provides a consistent snow cover on the slopes; its operation may vary seasonally. The upper Garabashi station is at an elevation of 3,847 meters and can be reached via three gondola lift sections. Check current operating conditions before your trip. This lets you consider the slopes and mountain station as separate focal points when planning your trip, without losing sight of seasonal conditions.

History in Terskol and Choosing Where to Stay

The Museum of the Defense of the Elbrus Region in Terskol displays original Soviet and German weapons and equipment, rare wartime photographs and documents, and personal belongings of participants in the 1942–1943 battles for the Caucasus heights. Guided tours take visitors through the exhibition and to an observation platform with panoramic views of the battlefields. Check current visiting arrangements and tour times before your visit.

These themes offer different starting points for planning your stay in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. Then narrow your search to the place where you would like to stay.
