Kozlovsky District between the Volga and the steppe
Accommodation in Kozlovsky District
In Kozlovsky District, a section of the Volga in the Kuybyshev Reservoir, protected steppe areas, and cultural sites with different historical connections come together. Travelers planning their trip around landscapes, nature, or history will find several distinct themes to explore here.
The Volga, the reservoir, and the Anish
Kozlovsky District includes a 30-kilometer stretch of the Volga in the Kuybyshev Reservoir. In this section, the reservoir is 2–4 kilometers wide and 6–8 meters deep. The right bank is high and is not flooded, except at the mouth of the Anish. The lower course of the Anish River also shapes the district’s waterways: it runs through Kozlovsky District and flows into the reservoir. This brings together a broad stretch of the Volga and a river course with a clearly identified mouth. The width and depth figures refer to the section of the reservoir in the district; the Anish is a separate river that flows into this reservoir.
Steppe reserves and protected nature
The Attikovskiy Steppe Slope Regional State Nature Reserve is located in the rural settlement of Attikovo. Established in 1996, it protects and studies a steppe biocenosis—an ecological community characteristic of the steppe—that is unusual for Chuvashia. The reserve was expanded in 2006 and covers 255.5 hectares.
Another protected area is the Kovyl'naya Steppe, in the territory of the Tyurlema rural settlement. It was also established in 1996, covers 38.2 hectares, and lies on the elevated right bank of the Volga. The reserve protects a stretch of steppe described as unique in the republic. Feather grass listed in the Red Book of Russia grows there. In terms of size, the Attikovskiy Steppe Slope Reserve is considerably larger; the Kovyl'naya Steppe is distinguished in particular by its location on the banks of the Volga and its protected feather grass. If you would like to include either reserve in your travel plans, check current access arrangements in advance.
Places of historical significance
The Museum of Hero of the Soviet Union Sergei Nikolayevich Butyakov is located in the village of Nizhnee Anchikovo and opened in November 2016. If you plan to visit the museum, check current access arrangements in advance. In Kozlovka, the merchant Grigori Volchkov’s house, built in 1914, also stands on the banks of the Volga. The two dates point to different historical reference points in the district: the opening of a museum in the 21st century and a merchant’s house from the early 20th century.
Culture in the wider destination
In the Republic of Chuvashia, the wider travel destination, the Museum of Chuvash Embroidery is located in central Cheboksary. Housed in a historic two-story building, it opened on June 23, 2015. The building was initially used as an infirmary for soldiers in the tsarist army. The first exhibition hall presents the history of Chuvash folk embroidery from the 18th century and its professional development in the 20th century.
Among the museum’s oldest and most valuable exhibits are a women’s shirt from the 18th century with three pairs of kĕskĕ chest patterns, a bridal coverlet, and the groom’s towels with stitches on both sides. The republic’s culture is thus explored through both the development of embroidery and specific garments and textiles.
