Discover Bryansk: Park Museum, Monuments and the Desna
Accommodation in Bryansk
Bryansk brings together a range of cultural themes: at the photography museum, a historical printing process is the focus of a workshop; the A. K. Tolstoy Park Museum combines sculptures with legends; and a staircase shapes the riverfront along the Desna. Monuments reflect the city’s history and Yuri Gagarin’s visit. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests—from photography and art to memorial sites and striking architecture.
Photography History and Cyanotype
The MIF Museum of Photography History offers the “Tsianotipiya dlya vsekh” workshop on cyanotype, a photographic printing process dating from 1842. The workshop combines photography with hands-on exploration of this particular process. Availability may vary, so check with the museum before your visit.
The museum also has a lecture hall for cultural and educational projects, as well as an exhibition hall hosting rotating exhibitions of painting, graphic art and photography. Two different aspects come together here: exploring a photographic printing process and an exhibition program that includes painting and graphic art alongside photography.
Sculptures and Stories at the A. K. Tolstoy Park Museum
Tours titled “Skazka Bryanskogo parka” explore legends about the sculptures, their history and the culture of the Bryansk region. Check in advance whether tours are running on the date of your visit. The theme spans individual works and stories about the region.
The park was named after the writer Alexey Konstantinovich Tolstoy in 1967, on the 150th anniversary of his birth, and received official park-museum status in 1974. At the entrance, the composition “Gimn trudu” depicts a blacksmith, a baker, and glass and wood artisans as symbols of the traditional crafts of the Bryansk region. The park museum complex also has a collection of wooden sculptures. The crafts depicted and the wooden sculptures offer different perspectives on sculpture.
Monuments Between City History and Remembrance
The monument commemorating Bryansk’s 1,000th anniversary was unveiled in 1985. Its composition combines the sculpture group “Peresvet i Bayan” with a towering stele bearing a figure of Motherland. It stands on Pokrovskaya Hill, where old Bryansk originated and the city center remained until the end of the 18th century. The monument thus combines a striking sculptural composition with a site closely connected to Bryansk’s historical development.
Another place of remembrance is the monument to Yuri Gagarin on Gagarin Boulevard. The boulevard is directly associated with the world’s first cosmonaut’s visit to Bryansk. Holy Trinity Cathedral is the main cathedral of the Bryansk Metropolis.
The “Potemkinskaya” Staircase on the Desna
The “Potemkinskaya” Staircase on the riverfront leads down to the Desna and has 145 steps. It is considered the riverfront’s most prominent visual landmark. Its nickname comes from its resemblance to the famous staircase in Odesa. The number of steps, its connection to the Desna and its association with Odesa reflect different aspects of the structure: its distinctive form, its location on the riverfront and the origin of its name. Unlike the sculptures and legends at the park museum, the staircase itself is the striking architectural feature here.
