Altai Region: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Altai Region
In the Altai Region, forest trails, nature parks, lakes and museums offer a variety of travel experiences. As a diverse tourism region, it offers a range of recreation and tourism options, as well as numerous tourist routes. When planning a hotel stay, you can use specific places and themes as a starting point: some destinations are known for trails and landscapes, others for collections and history.
Forest Trails and Nature Park Routes
In Belokurikha, forest health trails invite visitors to go for walks. More challenging routes lead to the natural landmarks of Lonely Pine, Four Brothers Rock and Shishi Creek. A chairlift takes visitors to the summit of Mount Tserkovka; check its operating status before your trip.
More than half of Altai Foothills Nature Park, in the Smolensky and Altai districts, is designated as a recreation and tourism zone. The park’s existing educational trails lead to rock formations, a former tungsten mine, abandoned mines and factory villages. The development of ecological trails with observation platforms for watching birds and animals is also permitted there. The existing educational trails and the permitted development of such ecological trails therefore represent different types of route information.
Plant and Animal Life
A botanical survey in Altai Foothills Nature Park recorded about 700 plant species, including relicts of deciduous forests, endemic plants and 20 rare species listed in the Red Book. In the park’s steppe meadow zone, up to 70 different plants bloom successively in a single square metre. The two figures describe different scales: the approximate number of recorded species and plant diversity within a small area.
The nature park is home to 19 rare animal species, including the golden eagle, steppe eagle, peregrine falcon, eagle owl and musk deer. These examples give a concrete impression of the species featured in the park’s natural history.
Lakes and Distinctive Natural Features
In Aya Nature Park, Lake Aya is the main attraction; the park covers nearly 2,000 hectares. White Lake in Kurinsky District is considered deep and clear, and suitable for swimming and fishing. These lakes represent different natural and recreational features of the region.
On the shores of Lake Kolyvan are rock formations shaped by the wind over many thousands of years. Some resemble animals, others castles and towers. The relict aquatic plant water caltrop (Chilim) is also abundant there. Goluboe Lake, also known as Lazorevoe Lake, was created in Tretyakovsky District with human involvement, at the site of a former copper sulfate quarry.
Denisova Cave can also be described in terms of its precise measurements: it lies in Soloneshensky District at 670 metres above sea level, covers an area of 270 square metres and is 110 metres long. Mount Babyrgan has been a natural monument of Altai Krai since 1998.
Museums and Cultural History
The Vasily Shukshin Museum in Srostki opened in 1978. It is housed in the former wooden school building that Shukshin attended and where he taught briefly, and holds thousands of exhibits. In Barnaul, the State Art Museum of Altai Krai has a collection of icons dating from the 17th to the 20th century, including a large collection of Siberian icons.
The two museums offer different cultural points of interest: in Srostki, the history of a school building and Shukshin’s brief teaching career are paired with an extensive collection; in Barnaul, icons and the Siberian collection are the focus. If you plan your trip around your interests, you can compare these museum themes with the region’s nature trails, lakes and landscapes, and prioritise the places that matter most to you.
