Campia brings together Loendro groves, river scenery, archaeological remains and viewpoints. When choosing a destination, you can decide whether to focus on seasonal nature-watching, paths by the water or historic sites. Local highlights range from the flowering season of a botanical reserve to the preserved structural remains of a Castro and works of art in the parish church.

Loendro and trails through the reserve

The Percurso do Cambarinho partly follows the Ribeira de Cambarinho stream and passes Loendro groves. In Cambarinho, in Campia, the Reserva Botânica de Loendros was established on 25 August 1971. The main Loendro flowering season is in May and June. If you would like to include this seasonal natural feature in your plans, these months are a suitable guide for timing your visit.

Hiking and interpretation trails run through the Reserva Botânica de Loendros year-round. The seasonal bloom and the trails through the protected area offer different perspectives on nature around Cambarinho. The Percurso do Cambarinho’s connection to the stream adds another specific landscape feature to these impressions.

Riverside beach on the Rio Alfusqueiro

Praia Fluvial do Porto da Várzea lies between Campia and Cercosa, on both banks of the Rio Alfusqueiro. Its recreation area includes a picnic area, barbecue grills, a children’s playground and a bar-restaurant. This means the site can be described not only by its riverside location but also by the facilities available there.

Barbo-comum, Boga-comum, river trout, Escalo do Norte and Bordalo can be observed in the Rio Alfusqueiro at Praia Fluvial do Porto da Várzea. For anyone interested in river landscapes, the site combines time by the water with a specific selection of fish species to look out for.

Archaeology, church and recorded history

Castro do Cabeço do Couço near Crasto in Campia is classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Property of Public Interest). It probably dates from the Late Bronze Age and remained inhabited during the Iron Age. The inner defensive wall and structural remains of three roundhouses have been preserved. The wall and the roundhouse remains offer two distinct points of reference for exploring the site and its architecture.

Igreja Paroquial de Campia also features distinctive craftsmanship: its main altarpiece has gilded carvings, and the church also has pulpits in the Rococo style. The 18th-century parish memoirs provide another way to understand its history. They record numerous watermills and a few fulling mills in the parish of Campia.

Monuments and viewpoints

Monumento Ă  Virgem Milagrosa de Campia was inaugurated on 31 August 2013. It is approximately 15 metres high and stands on a hill overlooking the village. Behind the monument is Miradouro Lagoa, a large lagoon. The two places represent different aspects of the landscape: the view over Campia from the hill and the lagoon behind the monument.

Miradouro Cruzeiro was built in Campia in 1940. From there, the view extends over Campia and the surrounding area. It can be reached by a staircase of approximately 300 steps. This approximate number of steps is a useful planning detail if you would like to include this viewpoint in your visit.
