Povolide: Hiking Trail, Manor Houses and Heritage
Accommodation in Povolide
Povolide combines a rural landscape with traces of history. The PR17 gives your trip a specific hiking focus: the 9.5-kilometre circular trail has a rural and historic character and passes buildings and historic features. The parish’s cultural heritage also includes a church, rock-cut tombs and various manor houses. Cheese-making offers another distinctive experience. Depending on whether you want to hike, are interested in historic sites or would like to include a cheese-making experience, these themes can give your trip different focal points.
The PR17 hiking route
The PR17 starts and ends at the car park opposite the Igreja Paroquial de Povolide. Starting and finishing at the same place gives the circular route a clear departure and return point. In both directions, the trail is marked according to the standards of the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal. Both its circular layout and its markings in both directions are therefore important features for finding your way along the route.
There is a small fountain and picnic tables at the car park. Check the condition of these facilities locally before setting off. Along the way, the trail runs between fields bordered by old walls. These walls are made of granite stones stacked on top of one another; numerous broad-canopied oak trees add to the rural landscape. The trail’s built features thus sit alongside farmland and the trees that accompany the route.
Buildings and historic traces along the trail
One of the stops on the PR17 is Casa Francisco Diogo Lopes Júnior. The house is an architectural example of an old landowning family line associated with rural life. Chafariz do Eirô was built in 1831. The circular route also leads to Quinta do Paço, considered an exceptional manor house. These places give the trail’s rural and historic character specific names and a range of architectural points of interest.
Heading towards Outeiro de Povolide, the PR17 passes a former prison and a Poldra that is now little used. The trail also leads to the centuries-old spring at Casal de Além. These places and features differ in their history and present-day status: the prison is a former building, while the Poldra is described as little used. They remain distinct points of interest along the circular route for planning your trip.
Heritage and landscape of the parish
The Igreja Paroquial de Povolide is part of the parish’s religious heritage. The Pelourinho de Povolide is also part of the local heritage. The only surviving fragment that can still be identified is a section of a column, reused as the base of a stone table at Largo da Capela de Povolide. The Pelourinho was restored in 2017. The monument’s restoration and the present-day reuse of its surviving fragment are two distinct aspects of its history.
The rock-cut tombs are also part of the parish’s history. Various manor houses shape the area and make its historic character visible. The parish landscape includes orchards, vineyards and agricultural estates in a green natural setting. Povolide’s character therefore encompasses both individual historic buildings and traces of the past, as well as a surrounding area shaped by agriculture and rural structures.
Cheese-making as a travel experience
At experiences offered at Quinta da Igreja, you can learn to make cheese. If you would like to include this activity in your travel plans, check in advance whether an experience is available on your chosen date and how to book it. This allows you to consider a cheese-making visit as a separate focus alongside the PR17 and Povolide’s historic sites.
