São Pedro Do Sul: Thermal Baths, River Routes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in São Pedro Do Sul
The routes vary considerably in length: alongside the approximately 3-kilometre-long Ecopista do Vouga, there are circular trails measuring 12.7, 14.6 and 15.8 kilometres. This allows you to consider your route choice separately from the historical and archaeological themes of your stay.
Thermal Baths and Traces of Roman Times
At the Termas de São Pedro do Sul, the remains of a Roman thermal bath show that the baths were already in use during the Romanisation period. The Roman thermal complex is classified as a National Monument and was in continuous use for 2,000 years. The composition of the thermal water is also specifically described: it contains sulphur, bicarbonate, sodium and fluoride.
Excavations at the ruins of the Roman thermal bath uncovered pools, water drainage channels, columns and column shafts, capitals, inscribed stone slabs, cladding and other structural features. The finds thus include both components of the water installations and architectural elements. Together with its classification as a National Monument, they give the site a clear cultural and historical focus.
Comparing the Ecopista and the Circular Trails
The approximately 3-kilometre-long Ecopista do Vouga runs between São Pedro do Sul and the thermal baths. It follows a former railway line alongside the cool waters of the Vouga River. Two bridges along the Ecopista have historical and heritage value. So, in addition to its length, the route’s character is shaped by the former railway line and its bridges.
For longer circular trails, different route descriptions can help you find your way. The Rota da Cárcoda is 14.6 kilometres long, moderately challenging and circular. The Rota do Castro do Banho is also a moderately challenging circular trail; it is 15.8 kilometres long and starts at the Termas de São Pedro do Sul on the left bank of the Vouga. The Rota de S. João Jerusalém is 12.7 kilometres long and is also a circular trail. It passes over the Ponte Nova to São Pedro do Sul and returns to the historic centre via the Parque do Lenteiro do Rio. In terms of length, this route is shorter than the two moderately challenging circular trails.
The Rota da Cárcoda runs through the Serra da Arada, south of the Douro. The area is important for wolf conservation and is part of the Serra da Freita e Arada Natura 2000 site (PTCON0047). In addition to route length, the landscape and its importance for wolf conservation are another factor to consider when choosing a hiking destination.
Historic Sites and Archaeological Evidence
The buildings also offer different historical perspectives. Queen Amélia stayed several times at the Palácio dos Marqueses de Reriz in the late 19th century. The Solar da Lapa is a 17th-century building at the entrance to the historic centre of São Pedro do Sul.
A Pedra da Escrita is a monument made from a vertically split block of rock. Its flat, east-facing surface is completely covered with engravings. These include simple and concentric circles, square checkerboard patterns and cup marks, also known as cupules. More than 30 mostly circular dwelling structures have been excavated at Castro do Banho. These archaeological sites differ both in their form and in the features visible at each: rock engravings at one, and the remains of dwelling structures at the other.
More Things to Do
The Bioparque de São Pedro do Sul has a picnic area, a playground, swimming pools and other facilities for leisure and relaxation. It offers a different focus from the Ecopista and the circular trails. When comparing destinations, you can take into account the landscape and cultural themes as well as the leisure options described for each.
