Santar: Gardens, Churches and Old Paths
Accommodation in Santar
Santar is best experienced through its historic townscape: narrow, winding streets lead to squares with buildings of architectural and landscape significance, quintas and gardens. The focus is not only on individual buildings. The paths between the squares and the garden landscape also shape the town. If you are considering Santar as a travel destination, its heritage and townscape are a key focus here, complemented by landscape views along Route PR2.
Garden Terraces and Townscape
The Santar Vila Jardim project preserves a continuous series of garden terraces. It is connected to the Casa dos Condes de Santar e Magalhães, Casa da Magnólia, the garden of Igreja da Misericórdia, Jardim dos Linhares, Casa Ibérico Nogueira, Casa das Fidalgas and other houses, and extends across vineyards. The sequence of terraces gives the garden landscape a coherence of its own alongside the architecture of individual houses: gardens, buildings and vineyards are part of a continuous townscape here.
Route PR2: From the Town to the Countryside
Route PR2 Santar starts at Largo do Paço dos Cunhas and crosses the town in the direction of Casa de Santar. A section along the Rio Dão runs through a lush gallery of riverside vegetation. The route also offers views of the Serra do Caramulo over vineyards and Santar’s townscape. The same route therefore takes in both the town and a variety of landscapes.
The route also includes an old paved path of Roman origin. A short detour leads to a medieval lagareta. Together with the riverside section and the views, these provide several specific points of interest: historic paths, a medieval structure or the countryside around Santar. No walking time or difficulty rating is specified.
Churches and Historic Buildings
Igreja Matriz de Santar is considered a 10th-century building. Igreja da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Santar is considered a 17th-century building and features Mannerist design with Flemish influence. Solar dos Condes de Santar dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Paço dos Cunhas de Santar is classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Property of Public Interest).
These buildings offer different perspectives on the town’s history: the Matriz dates back to the 10th century; at the Misericórdia, both its period of construction and its Mannerist design with Flemish influence are defining features. The Solar spans two centuries, while the classification of Paço dos Cunhas draws attention to its heritage. This allows you to distinguish Santar’s historical features by period, design and heritage status.
Religious Tradition and Beira Cuisine
For 2026, Semana Santa in Santar was described as one of the most defining moments of religious tourism in the municipality of Nelas. Paço dos Cunhas has a restaurant that preserves Beira cuisine through dishes with a contemporary touch. Alongside churches, houses and gardens, a seasonal religious tradition and a distinct culinary aspect are therefore among the things that make Santar what it is.
When looking for a hotel in Santar, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: the town’s architectural and garden history, or Route PR2 with its riverside vegetation, vineyards and views. This contrast brings together Santar’s cultural and natural sides without turning them into a single sightseeing itinerary.
