Mangualde
Accommodation in Mangualde
Mangualde offers a range of attractions for a trip: archaeological remains at Monte da Senhora do Castelo, historic architecture and the Feira dos Santos in November. If you are looking for a hotel, the purpose of your trip can help you choose when to visit. The local features below offer specific points to consider when planning.
Archaeology at Monte da Senhora do Castelo
At the summit of the hill of the same name stands the Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Castelo. An Iron Age fortified settlement, later Romanised, stood on the site of the chapel. Thus, two historical periods meet at this place: the Iron Age settlement and its later Romanisation.
The archaeological site of SĂtio ArqueolĂłgico da Raposeira lies at the western foot of Monte da Senhora do Castelo. The Citânia da Raposeira has a Roman settlement phase dating from the final decade of the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD. This phase therefore extends beyond the turn of the era.
Palace complex and religious architecture
The Palácio dos Condes de Anadia comprises a palace, gardens, an estate and adjoining woodland. The complex is classified as being of public interest (CIP). Palácio Anadia is an example of civil Rococo architecture, while also reflecting northern Portuguese Baroque models with Nasoni influence.
The Igreja de São Julião, Mangualde’s parish church, includes the churchyard and a Stations of the Cross route where ten crosses still remain. The palace complex and parish church showcase historic architecture and its associated grounds; at the archaeological sites on Monte, the focus is on traces of earlier settlements.
Getting your bearings at Rossio
The Pegadas com História walking route starts at Rossio, next to the Paços do Concelho. The municipal tourist information office is located in the Paços do Concelho.
Feira dos Santos in November
The Feira dos Santos will take place in Mangualde in November 2026. It brings together traditional gastronomy, handicrafts and agricultural products. Foods and drinks mentioned include febras, enchidos, dried fruit and wine. If you would like to plan your stay around the fair, check the specific event dates before travelling.
A historical project proposal
Another point of reference is the Live Beach Mangualde project: the proposal from March 2011 envisaged an artificial beach complex on a 22,500 m² site next to Monte de Nossa Senhora do Castelo. The proposal included an 11,000 m² sandy area and a 60 m-long saltwater pool.
