Telões: Castle, Hiking Trail and Rural Heritage
Accommodation in Telões
Notable destinations in Telões include Castelo de Pena de Aguiar, classified as a National Monument; the circular “Trilho Interpretativo das Aves de Rapina” trail; the settlement of Aldeia do Castelo; and two chapels. Together, cultural history and hiking offer different perspectives on the area.
Castle, History and Settlement
Castelo de Pena de Aguiar is classified as a National Monument. Its legal heritage status is based on Decree No. 28/82, published on 26 February 1982. The history of the castle hill spans several periods: its military use dates back to Roman times. By contrast, the surviving complex is believed to have been built around the turn of the 12th century. These two dates refer to different phases: Roman times concern the military use of the hill, while the tentative dating refers to the construction of the surviving complex.
Aldeia do Castelo, a distinctive settlement of stone masonry and brick, lies directly beside Castelo de Pena de Aguiar. It retains its rural architectural style and is very well preserved. This brings an entire settlement into view alongside the individual monument. Other sights in Telões include Capela do Divino Salvador and Capelinha do Padre Manuel Couto. The castle, settlement and chapels offer different ways to focus on culture during a stay.
The “Trilho Interpretativo das Aves de Rapina” Circular Trail
The circular trail starts and ends in the churchyard of Telões parish church. It runs within the Natura 2000 network, in the Alvão/Marão Site of Community Importance. The route leads to the rocky outcrop where the ruins of Castelo de Aguiar de Pena stand; a short detour allows you to visit the monument. There is also a bird of prey observation centre beside the trail, near Castelo de Aguiar de Pena. The trail therefore has a clear starting and finishing point and includes the castle as a place to visit via a short detour. The churchyard marks the start and end of the circular trail; Alvão/Marão, on the other hand, identifies the Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 network. The starting point and the area designation are thus clearly distinguished.
You can walk the Bird of Prey Trail on its own or combine it with PR1 VPA, the “Trilho Interpretativo da Veronica micrantha.” The two trails share a section between the villages of Pontido and Castelo. This gives you the choice of following one trail independently or combining it with a second named route.
