Ribeira de Pena can be explored through a range of interests: educational history and crafts, trails through the landscape, or outdoor activities on the Tâmega. When planning your stay, it is worth considering these options separately. Museums tell the story of the area’s heritage, hiking trails lead to different points of interest in the landscape, and Pena Aventura focuses on leisure activities and adventure sports.

Culture, Education and Crafts

In the heart of Ribeira de Pena, the Museu Escola is housed in a century-old building that was once a primary school. It is dedicated to the history of education in Portugal. The Ribeira de Pena Tourist Office is also located in the Museu Escola and provides information about the region’s heritage, major sights and available activities.

The permanent exhibition “Camilo e Ribeira de Pena” at the Casa Museu de Camilo recreates Camilo and Joaquina’s living quarters. The presentation evokes a 19th-century rural home. The Ponte de Arame offers a different perspective on the area’s architectural heritage: a striking and imposing bridge dating from the 20th century.

Ribeira de Pena is particularly known for its handwoven linen, especially in the parishes of Cerva and Limões. The annual Feira do Linho promotes local artisans and helps preserve the linen tradition. The Ecomuseum of Ribeira de Pena aims to preserve and share the local community’s cultural heritage. The Museu da Venda Nova houses the Ecomuseum’s Interpretation Centre and displays collections relating to archaeological, historical, artistic and ethnographic heritage.

Trails and Landscape

The Tâmega is one of the most important natural features of the municipality’s landscape and history. The Levada de Santo Aleixo trail passes through landscapes such as the Vale Escuro and the valleys of the Beça and Tâmega rivers. This brings both a defining river and specific landscape areas along a route into focus when exploring the region.

The Caminho do Abade begins in the centre of Ribeira de Pena at the Igreja Matriz do Divino Salvador. In Friúme, the route leads to the Ilha dos Amores, regarded as a viewpoint for taking in the landscape. Another hiking option is the PR3 – Vale do Póio in Cerva: the circular trail is about 11.3 kilometres long and starts and ends there. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

At the entrance to Ribeira de Pena, near the village of Bucheiro, lies the Parque Ambiental do Bucheiro protected area. It has two interpretation centres and an environmental workshop. If these facilities are important to your plans, check visiting options in advance.

Outdoor Activities and the Tâmega

Pena Aventura Park is located in Ribeira de Pena and offers leisure activities and adventure sports. Its activities include a seven-kilometre rafting descent on the Tâmega, featuring rapids and jumps from rocks. The Fantasticable consists of a 1,538-metre-long cable at a height of 150 metres, connecting Lamelas and Bustelo. These two experiences can be distinguished by their different features—a river descent and a cable ride—without confusing them with hiking trails.

Getting There and Local Products

For bus travel, the bus stations in Vila Real or Guimarães are possible starting points. Local buses run daily from both directly to the centre of Ribeira de Pena and to Cerva. Check the timetable for your travel day, as schedules can change. The A7 motorway has a direct exit for Ribeira de Pena.

Traditional smoked meats are also part of the area’s local character: alheiras, chouriça, salpicão and presunto are made using artisanal methods. Maronesa beef comes from the Maronesa cattle breed, which is raised in the region’s mountains. These products add regional food culture to the area’s cultural and landscape highlights, without presuming a visit to a particular restaurant.
