Mondim De Basto: Fisgas de Ermelo, Nature and Heritage
Accommodation in Mondim De Basto
At Fisgas de Ermelo, water and hiking trails come together as a distinctive natural feature of Mondim de Basto. The PR3 Fisgas de Ermelo trail leads to Piocas de Cima and de Baixo, small, crystal-clear natural pools that invite visitors to enjoy a refreshing swim. At the same time, the trail offers a closer look at the natural assets of Parque Natural do Alvão. Check trail conditions before setting out; whether the pools are suitable for swimming depends on the conditions at the time.
Nature, Water and Trails
Within Mondim de Basto, Parque Natural do Alvão covers 2,859 hectares. This includes a significant part of the Freguesia Ermelo and a small area on the edge of the Freguesia Bilhó. Another hiking option is the PR8 Caminho do Porto Velho, which leads to the Dorna, a natural, clear-water spot that invites visitors to enjoy a refreshing swim on hot days. The destinations are distinct: the PR3 has two named pools, while the PR8 leads to the Dorna. Swimming suitability may vary depending on conditions.
On the PR2 Levada de Piscaredo, the 8.8-kilometre route connects Vilar de Ferreiros and Mondim de Basto. It passes through forests and a riverside corridor rich in woodland birdlife. The Levadas of Alvão are irrigation channels that also support tourism. Alongside the hiking trails, the Rio Olo offers opportunities for trout fishing and nature-focused visits along its banks; river conditions change seasonally. The Rio Tâmega has canoeing routes and opportunities for water sports. Before taking part, check local conditions and with activity providers.
The new Miradouro das Fisgas de Ermelo is also part of the visitor facilities at the waterfall: it was inaugurated on 19 April 2026 and improves the safety of access to the main viewpoint. The viewpoint complements the trails that lead visitors closer to the natural assets of Alvão.
History and Heritage
Circular, square and rectangular structures have been preserved at Castro do Crastoeiro. They provide evidence of settlement during the Iron Age and Romanization. The permanent archaeological exhibition at the Museu Municipal de Mondim de Basto includes artefacts from excavations at the Castro. A second permanent exhibition displays rocks and fossils from Mondim de Basto and the Serra do Alvão. Various exhibitions are offered free of charge, and recreational and educational activities are also available. The exhibition programme may change.
In the historic centre, the Núcleo Histórico developed around the Capela do Santíssimo Sacramento e da Paixão do Senhor. Mondim de Basto was founded during the reign of D. Sancho I in the 12th century. Bridges also tell the story of different eras: the Ponte da Várzea over the Olo probably dates back to an ancient Roman crossing, was rebuilt in the Middle Ages and has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público since 1990. The Roman Bridge of Cabresto over the Poio is considered the only National Monument in the Concelho of Mondim de Basto.
The Roteiro Religioso runs from the Capela de Santa Quitéria to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Graça and is regarded as a route for artistic, historical, cultural and ethnographic discovery. The sanctuary is reached via National Road 312, which connects Mondim with Cerva and Ribeira de Pena. The road is considered wide, paved and protected by guardrails; as road conditions can change, check them locally before driving.
Cycling and Regional Cuisine
For mountain biking, Mondim de Basto has a BTT centre with four difficulty levels, 155 kilometres of trails, of which 29.35 kilometres are signposted, and a bicycle service station. Check infrastructure details before your trip. Regional cuisine offers another point of interest: roasted Cabrito das terras altas do Minho with oven-baked rice is a traditional regional speciality, and Milhos ricos is also associated with Mondim de Basto. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, first choose the focus of your trip—nature and water, heritage, cycling or regional cuisine.
