Mesão Frio brings together the Douro wine region, viewpoints, trails and cultural sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Mesão Frio, these different themes can help you plan your trip: would you mainly like to enjoy the landscape, learn about the area’s history, or discover regional cuisine and wine? Mesão Frio lies within the demarcated Douro wine region and has long been associated with winegrowing. This is reflected in both its cultural landscape and local produce.

Viewpoints and Wine Landscape

The Donsumil Viewpoint is 670 metres above sea level. From there, you can see an expansive cultural landscape recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sr.ª da Piedade viewpoint offers a different perspective: it is considered a place to watch the sunset, offers views of the vineyards of the Douro Valley and is surrounded by green vineyards. If you plan your outings around the views, you can choose between an expansive cultural landscape and the vineyards as two different perspectives.

Trails Through the Region

The Santo André Trail is a circular route. It starts and ends in the centre of Vila de Mesão Frio, in the parish of Santo André, and passes through the vineyard terraces of the Alto Douro Wine Region. This is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and as a cultural, evolving and living landscape. The trail also offers the option of a detour of about 700 metres to the Serrado Viewpoint. The stated distance refers to this detour.

The Caminho de Torres follows a different route: it starts in Vila de Mesão Frio, connects Salamanca with Santiago de Compostela and crosses the municipality of Mesão Frio. For your plans, you can choose between a local circular route that starts and ends in the town and a pilgrimage route that crosses the municipality on its way between the two cities.

Museums and History

The Casa-Museu do escritor Domingos Monteiro is located on the writer’s former estate and in his former residence. Its exhibition rooms are dedicated to his life and work and include original materials and documents. The Museu do Triciclo offers a very different perspective through its collection: it contains more than 200 tricycles made in Portugal, Europe, North America and Asia. The pieces date from the 19th century to the 1990s. Their origins and date range provide two specific points of comparison.

The Torre de Santa Cristina is the surviving bell tower of the former Santa Cristina church, which was destroyed on 11 May 1809. In 2021, the tower was converted into an urban viewpoint. The Núcleo Interpretativo do Castro de Cidadelhe offers another historical perspective, providing information about the Castro de Cidadelhe, including the findings of the archaeological investigations carried out there.

Cuisine and Wine from Mesão Frio

A particular feature of the traditional cuisine is kid goat served with rice and potatoes baked in a wood-fired oven. The traditional Biscoitos de Vila Marim are also among the local specialities. Marrã is associated with the cuisine of Mesão Frio and the history of its local population. Wine production complements these culinary themes: wines produced in Mesão Frio include white and red Douro DOC wines, which are considered excellent, as well as table wines, regional Douro wines and Port wines. Whether you want to plan your stay around the landscape, history or regional cuisine, Mesão Frio offers something to explore for each of these interests.
