Manta Rota combines a beach, a dune landscape, a coastal cycling route and a distinctive festival tradition. These features have different relevance when choosing a destination: Praia de Manta Rota lies on the eastern edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the Ecovia do Litoral passes through the town, and São João da Degola takes place during a set period in August. When planning a stay, you can weigh nature, activity and culture as specific priorities.

Beach and natural setting

The Ria Formosa Natural Park stretches along the Algarve coast as far as Manta Rota. It includes barrier islands, salt marshes, sandbanks, dunes and salt pans. In regional terms, the Ria Formosa extends over 60 kilometres, from Ancão to the towns of Manta Rota and Cacela Velha. This places Manta Rota beach within a larger coastal area with diverse landscapes.

At the beach, raised boardwalks lead through the dunes and allow visitors to observe the dune vegetation. The paths draw attention to the landscape right beside the beach. There are also various opportunities for water sports. A children’s playground and a car park are also located at Praia de Manta Rota. Nature observation and water sports thus offer different ways to enjoy a visit to the beach.

Cycling along the coast

The Ecovia do Litoral passes through Manta Rota between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. It is part of the European cycling route network EuroVelo and belongs to Route 1, the Atlantic Coast Route. The Ecovia provides direct access to several beaches. In the direction of Manta Rota, the EuroVelo 1 – Rota da Costa Atlântica – Algarve also passes through an area with ecologically significant lakes.

Two aspects are useful for finding your way: the Ecovia’s route places Manta Rota between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, while its connection to EuroVelo describes the wider route network. If you plan to cycle on the Ecovia, check the current route and conditions in advance.
