Entre Ambos-os-Rios: Rivers, Walking Trails and Heritage
Accommodation in Entre Ambos-os-Rios
Entre Ambos-os-Rios lies on a peninsula between the Rio Froufe and the Rio Tamente. Another riverside destination is the Ancoradouro on the Rio Lima. The landscape, trails along the Serra Amarela and local buildings offer different ways to choose your destination. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay focused on nature and heritage, you can weigh up the activities and attractions to decide which focus best suits your travel plans.
Walking Trails Along the Serra Amarela
The Trilho Interpretativo de S. Miguel de Entre Ambos-os-Rios is a short scenic and cultural trail that starts in the village. A trail on the slopes of the Serra Amarela passes through pine trees, oaks and broom before reaching the gorges of the Carcerelhe River. There, the cool water and pools make a suitable place to rest. When planning the route, you can take in the vegetation and terrain while also choosing a specific stop by the water.
The short trail to Ermida starts beside the São Miguel Church. It follows the GR 34, the Serra Amarela Great Interpretive Route, for almost three kilometres before reaching Ermida. While the scenic and cultural character is central to the Trilho, the route to Ermida has a specific destination and a shared section with the GR 34. These offer different points of reference if you want to match your hiking interests to your choice of destination.
Riverside Scenery and Water Activities
The Ancoradouro de Entre Ambos-os-Rios is on the Rio Lima, beside the Touvedo Dam and the local campsite in the Entre Ambos-os-Rios parish. It is in Peneda-Gerês National Park, which is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Ancoradouro can be reached via the N203 national road.
In suitable weather, kayak trips on the river are common there for almost the entire year. If you are planning a trip for a particular day, check beforehand whether the weather will allow for suitable conditions. In the wider area around Entre Ambos-os-Rios, the Albufeira de Touvedo on the Rio Lima offers opportunities for canoeing and sport fishing. The water activities therefore have different locations: kayak trips take place at the Ancoradouro, while canoeing and sport fishing are possible at the reservoir.
Church, Cruzeiro and Festival Date
The São Miguel parish church dates from the 17th and 18th centuries; the Cruzeiro de Entre Ambos-os-Rios is a modern granite cross with geometric decorations. They have distinct connections to different periods and forms: the older parish church and the modern cross with its geometric design.
The festival takes place on the Sunday immediately after 13 May. A celebration in honour of Our Lady is held near a monument in Entre Ambos-os-Rios. Separately, a monument in Portugal dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima is considered the second largest of its kind in the country. If you plan to attend the festival, check the date for the relevant year.
