If you are considering a stay in Cornes, you will encounter several distinct themes: archaeological traces, religious traditions, evidence of past uses and the Trilho Monte das Minas. The historical references span from the Iron Age to possible military connections from later periods of war. For your travel planning, it is worth considering these themes separately; the hiking trail comes with one specific condition: it can only be walked with a guide.

Archaeological traces and military history

Cividade is considered a fortified settlement from the Iron Age. At the same time, the site shows evidence of Roman settlement, including numerous fragments of roof tiles known as tegulae. These two references relate to different periods: the fortification dates from the Iron Age, while the tile fragments point to Roman settlement. If you are interested in early settlement history, you can therefore view Cividade from two clearly distinct historical perspectives.

Two concentric earthworks are located on Coroa do Picoto. They very likely belong to a fortification from the Portuguese Restoration War or the Napoleonic Wars. This provides a different military-historical reference alongside the settlement traces at Cividade. The probable attribution leaves open which of the two periods of war is meant. Cornes’ history thus brings together archaeological evidence and a military past whose attribution remains tentative.

Religious traditions and local heritage

São Pantaleão is the patron saint of Cornes. The feast in his honour on 27 July is one of the village’s festive traditions. Another local legend centres on the “Procissão do Cerco”: during the well-known dispute between parishioners from Cornes and Candemil, the statues of their patron saints were damaged. São Pantaleão lost an ear, and São Félix lost two fingers. The story links the two communities with their respective patron figures and gives the legend a specific local history. This brings out different facets of religious tradition: devotion to the patron saint and a story connecting Cornes with Candemil.

The “Matança do Porco” tradition was also presented in connection with Cornes. This took place at the sixth edition of “O Crochet Sai à Rua … em Cerveira” in 2023.

About two dozen watermills stand along the Cabral stream in Cornes. They form a distinct part of the local industrial heritage and broaden the picture beyond archaeological and religious themes. Monte do Vilar is also among Cornes’ cultural-historical and tourist attractions. For travellers interested in local history, the mills offer a different point of interest from the settlement and fortification traces.

Hiking with a guide

The Trilho Monte das Minas passes through the parishes of Cornes and Campos. The trail is not marked on the ground and can only be walked with a guide. Make sure to factor the need for a guide into your plans from the outset. Before setting out, check the latest route details and guiding arrangements. This way, you can take the specific trail conditions into account when planning to include the Trilho Monte das Minas in your stay.
