Caminha combines a historic townscape with trails for a range of activities and a beach at the mouth of the Rio Minho. If you are looking for a hotel in Caminha, you can decide in advance what you want to focus on during your trip: the old town and its architectural history, outdoor activities, time by the water, or local cuisine. The distinctions below give you an overview of what Caminha has to offer for your stay.

Old Town and Architectural History

In the Centro HistĂłrico de Caminha, Rua Direita is the central axis of an oval, orthogonal street network. The layout combines an oval overall shape with streets arranged at right angles, shaping the structure of the historic centre.

The Torre do Relógio is the only surviving tower of Caminha’s medieval walls. It houses the Núcleo Museológico do Centro Histórico de Caminha, which explains the town’s history. If you would like to visit the museum, check current access arrangements in advance.

The Conjunto Fortificado de Caminha comprises defensive walls and bastions dating from the 17th century. The Chafariz, meanwhile, is a Renaissance monument from the first half of the 16th century. The Igreja Matriz de Caminha is considered a significant example of Portuguese Late Gothic architecture and has three naves. A church that belonged to the former Convento de Santa Clara was built in the second half of the 16th century on the site of an earlier small hermitage. These buildings and their different periods offer several points of interest if you are interested in the history of the town.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Ecovia do Atlântico offers walking and cycling trails between Moledo and Vila Praia de Âncora. Its section at Praia da Foz de Caminha includes a wooden boardwalk almost one kilometre long, which you can use on foot or by bicycle. This makes it possible to distinguish a specific stretch of the Ecovia from the other trails in the area.

The Mata Nacional do Camarido covers about 164 hectares of woodland with trails for walking, cycling and running. Hiking and cycling are possible both on the Ecovia and in the woodland; running is an additional activity mentioned for the Mata Nacional.

The certified Caminho Português de Santiago – Caminho da Costa is 138 kilometres long in total and passes through the municipality of Caminha. The Portuguese government certified the route in 2022. If you are interested in the Camino de Santiago, this is a different way to experience Caminha than an outing along the boardwalk or through the woodland.

Beach Between Sea and River

Praia de Caminha, also known as Praia do Camarido, is located at the mouth of the Rio Minho. Visitors can choose between the fine sandy beach on the lively sea and the calmer river area. The river area is suitable for children, sailing and windsurfing. So if these activities are important to your trip, the distinction between the two beach areas is particularly useful.

Local Cuisine

Caminha’s cuisine includes fish specialities and river-fish dishes, including caldeirada à pescador (Tio Feito), lampreia de arroz à bordalesa and arroz de sável. The names offer a concrete introduction to the local selection, without treating river-fish dishes as the same as the other specialities.

As part of the seasonal initiative “Lampreia do Rio Minho – Um Prato de Excelência”, participating restaurants prepare lamprey from the Rio Minho according to local Alto Minho traditions. Check before your trip which restaurants are currently participating.

Getting There and Planning

Caminha is a railway station on CP’s regional Linha do Minho. If you are considering travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel dates. This lets you connect your travel plans with what matters most for your stay: the historic centre, trails, beach or cuisine.
