Discover Arcos de Valdevez through its architectural history, village traditions and nature experiences around Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês. There are also trails, science offerings, music and regional tastings. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can start by considering which of these aspects of the destination you would like to shape your stay.

Architectural history and village traditions

Paço de Giela reveals a long sweep of history in a single building: the tower visible today dates from the mid-14th century and replaced an earlier tower that already existed in the 11th century. The Paço is considered a remarkable example of medieval and early modern secular architecture, as well as one of the most important national monuments.

Centro Interpretativo do Barroco is located in Igreja do Espírito Santo, which is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. Espaço Valdevez – História e Arqueologia offers another perspective on the past: it presents the history of the Arcos de Valdevez area through a chronology spanning almost 8,000 years.

Sistelo and Soajo, too, have distinctive village histories. Sistelo was the national winner of “7 Maravilhas de Portugal” in the “Aldeia Rural” category. The village centre features Espigueiros, a traditional fountain, typical houses and Casa do Castelo de Sistelo, built in the mid-19th century. Soajo has a unique 16th-century pillory. On a large rocky outcrop stands a group of 24 Espigueiros made entirely of granite.

The Brandas and Inverneiras bear witness to an earlier agro-pastoral way of life based on seasonal transhumance. In summer, shepherds moved with their livestock to the higher-altitude Brandas; in winter, they moved to the lower-lying Inverneiras. As a result of far-reaching economic changes, this system is no longer practised in the same way today; the settlements remain in the landscape as traces of times past.

Landscape and nature experiences

Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês covers more than 70,000 hectares of protected land. Arcos de Valdevez is one of five municipalities whose territory lies within the park. The park also includes Serra do Soajo and Serra Amarela. Established in 1971, the national park is classified by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.

Porta do Mezio is one of five gateways to the park. Facilities there include a Biological Park, an Avifauna Observatory and an interpretation centre for the Mezio/Gião archaeological area. Parque Aventura at Porta do Mezio offers tree climbing, ziplining and climbing. Different operating arrangements may apply to individual facilities; check the relevant visitor information before making plans around them.

Museu da Água ao Ar Livre do Rio Vez is the starting point for getting oriented on a 20-kilometre trail between the river mouth and Ponte de Vilela: the museum serves as an information and welcome centre for the route. Six fauna and flora observation points are located along the trail. Both the distance and the designated nature-watching spots are useful details to factor into your plans.

Another landmark is Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Peneda. It features an approximately 300-metre-long, tree-lined stairway with 20 chapels depicting scenes from the life of Christ. If you are more interested in science, the outdoor area of Oficinas de Criatividade Himalaya – Centro de Ciência Viva dos Arcos has scientific equipment available for public use and a life-size replica of the Pirelióforo solar machine.

For wine enthusiasts, the Roteiro do Vez route includes visits to two Quintas on the slopes of the Vez Valley. Confirm which Quintas are taking part in the route before travelling.
