Sines combines a distinctive historical heritage with a variety of coastal attractions. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these interests separately: the castle, churches and museums tell the story of the town; Praia Vasco da Gama is a place for walks and water sports, while São Torpes is known for its waves and surf schools. The municipality’s natural areas are another possible focus for a stay.

Castle, maritime history and museums

Castelo de Sines is a medieval castle that was restored in the 16th century. It is classified as a Portuguese cultural asset of public interest. In the western part of the interior are the ruins of the palace where, according to tradition, Vasco da Gama was born in 1469.

One of the castle’s towers houses a museum area dedicated to Vasco da Gama. Beside the west tower stands the Estátua de Vasco da Gama, inaugurated on 19 December 1970 in honour of the navigator. The two sites offer different perspectives: the exhibition focuses on him, while the monument commemorates him at its location beside the castle.

The religious buildings also reflect different historical periods. Igreja de São Salvador, the parish church of Sines, replaced a medieval church in the 18th century. Capela de Nossa Senhora das Salvas, in turn, was commissioned by Vasco da Gama at the start of the 16th century on the site of a medieval hermitage. The church of Nossa Senhora das Salas has a treasury containing jewellery and other objects donated to Our Lady over the centuries.

Culture and archaeological traces

The Museu Arqueológico de Sines preserves archaeological remains found in the region. The Roman fish-processing facility offers a specific insight into fish processing: built in the 1st century, it used salt. The Sines municipal council restored the facility and converted it into a museum. Together, the collection and the facility connect regional finds with a particular historical industry.

Another cultural venue is the Sines Arts Centre, which opened in 2005. Its facilities include an exhibition hall, an auditorium, a library and the municipal historical archive. It therefore offers spaces for exhibitions and events, as well as areas for reading and historical records. Farol de Sines adds a maritime landmark to the picture: the lighthouse was built at Cabo de Sines in 1880 and is 22 metres tall.

Beach, activity and water sports

Praia Vasco da Gama is a sheltered bay within the town of Sines and is suitable for windsurfing and sailing. People walk and jog along Avenida Marginal. This stretch of beach therefore combines water sports with activity along the avenue. Porto de Recreio de Sines is close to Praia Vasco da Gama; it is the only marina along the coast between Setúbal and the Algarve.

Praia de São Torpes has a different character, with strong, consistent waves and surf schools. Its wave conditions and surf schools set it apart from the windsurfing and sailing options mentioned at Praia Vasco da Gama. São Torpes lies at the northern end of Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. The Passadiço da Costa do Norte is intended to prevent trampling of dunes and cliffs and support the recovery of coastal ecosystems.

Natural surroundings and trip planning

The Reserva Natural das Lagoas de Santo André e da Sancha is also part of the region’s natural landscape: it covers part of the coastline in the municipality of Sines. The nature reserve covers part of the coastline in the municipality of Sines.

When looking for a hotel in Sines, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your stay: the castle and heritage, museums, activities at Praia Vasco da Gama or the waves at São Torpes. This choice helps you focus on the experiences you want to enjoy locally, without grouping the different beaches and attractions into a single offering.
