The municipality of Moita lies on the left bank of the Tagus estuary and has more than 20 kilometres of waterfront. Its riverside landscape brings together well-kept green spaces, salt marshes, former salt pans, quays, shipyards and a river beach. Water, landscape and cultural history thus form a common thread for exploring the area.

Moita is close to Lisbon and Setúbal. Bus services connect it to Gare do Oriente in Lisbon and to Seixal, Barreiro, Montijo and Alcochete. As timetables and networks can change, check current services when planning your journey.

Riverside Landscape and Walks

A riverside project included seven interpretive routes, an orientation system and information panels about landscape and cultural heritage. The panels connect two perspectives on Moita: the landscape by the water and the municipality’s history. Individual facilities may change over time; if you are planning a particular route, check the latest information beforehand.

A municipal riverside path connects Cais da Moita with Sítio das Marinhas. The Varino “O Boa Viagem” programme also lists the Rota Ribeirinha along the riverside area of the municipality of Moita. A landing stage for traditional boats was also built at Cais da Moita. The two route options thus lead to different points of reference along Moita’s waterfront: one to a named destination, the other along the municipality’s riverside area.

Cultural History by the Water

Construction of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem in Moita began in May 1631. The municipality’s history also includes the Moinho de Maré tidal mill at the quay in Alhos Vedros. It was probably built by Pero Vicente in the first half of the 15th century.

In December 2022, the Palacete do Morgado da Casa da Cova / Condes de Sampayo in Alhos Vedros exhibited the Coleção Régia: a collection of portraits of Portuguese kings from the 18th century, comprising 26 paintings by Miguel António do Amaral. Another link between the two places is the Varino “O Boa Viagem” Rota com História, which connects Moita and Alhos Vedros and includes a visit to the Palacete Condes Sampayo.

The Varino “O Boa Viagem” is classified as an asset of municipal interest. Its annual programme includes river trips for individuals and groups. If you are planning a trip, check the current schedule. The boat thus links lively river activities with the cultural history that also shapes the municipality’s routes and buildings.

Events and Reasons to Visit

“Abra a Bagageira” takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month on Avenida Marginal in Moita. The Romaria a Cavalo Moita–Viana do Alentejo revives an older religious equestrian tradition each year; its dates vary from year to year. If you are planning your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance.

The Feira de Maio is usually held on the fourth weekend of May. Its programme includes traditional bull runs on Avenida Teófilo de Braga in Moita, gatherings of aficionados, tertulias and bullfighting clubs, as well as music. Here too, the exact dates and programme vary from year to year.

The annual Biofesta promotes organic producers as well as local, regional and other environmental and sustainability projects, and welcomes hundreds of visitors. Together with the monthly market and the Romaria, it illustrates the different rhythms of the events calendar: a recurring monthly event alongside festivals held annually.

Moita as a Base for Your Stay

When choosing Moita as a base for your hotel stay, you can take your travel interests as a guide: walking routes and riverside landscapes, churches, the mill and the Varino, or recurring events. Its location close to Lisbon and Setúbal, together with the bus services mentioned above, also offers a regional point of reference. This makes it possible to choose Moita as a destination based on the experiences you want to focus on during your stay.
