Discover Grândola
Accommodation in Grândola
Grândola combines an extensive sandy coastline with traces of different eras and routes through distinctive landscapes. The coastline stretches for 45 kilometres from the Tróia Peninsula to Melides Beach. Inland, themes range from Roman heritage and mining history to cork oaks, lagoons and regional cuisine.
Culture Through the Ages
Using interactive technology, the Núcleo Museológico Grândola, Vila Morena tells the story of the song: from José Afonso’s first encounter with the Sociedade Musical Fraternidade Operária Grandolense in 1964 to the present day. Exhibition areas, films and interactive activities are complemented by a recording studio and an auditorium. The Escultura a José Afonso also commemorates the songwriter of “Grândola, Vila Morena”; the Monumento à Liberdade is the final work by sculptor Jorge Vieira.
Older landmarks span different periods. The Monumento Megalítico da Pedra Branca is a tomb dating from the Late Neolithic to the Chalcolithic, around 3500 to 2000 BC. Improved access has been provided for visitors, with wooden walkways, physical protection and information panels; check current access arrangements in advance. The Barragem Romana do Pego da Moura has a wall originally about 40 metres long and six buttresses. In Tróia, the Estação Romana de Tróia is a National Monument: this Roman fish-preservation complex is one of the largest of its kind in the western Mediterranean.
Those interested in religious art will find around one hundred works at the Museu de Arte Sacra de Grândola. The Necrópole das Casas Velhas has improved access, with wooden walkways, physical protection and information panels. Together with the megalithic and Roman sites, it offers a glimpse into different ways of remembering and preserving the past.
Mining History and Science in Lousal
Key features of the Aldeia Mineira do Lousal include a dam, two lagoons, footpaths, the Museu Mineiro, facilities of the Centro Ciência Viva – Mina de Ciência and the Galeria Waldemar. The science centre offers interactive experiences and several permanent exhibitions on the natural sciences. In December 2024, the Museu Mineiro reopened to the public after extensive renovation and improvement works. Its exhibits tell the story of mining and the daily lives of miners during the mine’s 88 years of operation in the 20th century.
The PR7 “Lousal a Céu Aberto” offers a different perspective on the former mining area: this walking trail passes through the former open-pit mine. The route leads past geological formations as well as acidic green and red lagoons. It offers a chance to explore the area’s industrial past alongside the geological features of its landscape.
Hiking Among Cork Oaks and Lagoons
The PR1 GDL – Rota da Serra passes through a cork oak landscape notable for its high ecological value and rich biodiversity. The PR3 GDL – BioMelides focuses on the biodiversity around Lagoa de Melides and its adjoining ecosystems. The surrounding landscape includes rice fields, dune systems, pine forest, and the area around the lagoon and Melides Beach. Comparing the routes can help visitors choose based on the landscapes they most want to explore. A section of the Caminhos de Santiago, the GR11 E-9 route from Sagres to Saint Petersburg, also crosses the municipality of Grândola.
Regional Cuisine and Crafts
Culinary traditions bring together coastal fish and seafood dishes with Alentejo fare from inland areas. These include açordas and dishes made with game, wild boar, pork and lamb. Traditional sweets include Bolo das Rosas, pine nut sweets and Alcomonias. Pine nuts, sweet potatoes, rice, cured meats, Alentejo bread and honey round out the range of local produce.
Craft traditions also tell the story of regional everyday culture. They include pottery, woollen mats, shepherds’ crafts and the construction of thatched huts, as well as painted ceramics, wrought iron, cork crafts, toys and other woodwork. Traditional textiles such as talegos complete this varied picture. From Lisbon, take the A2 to reach Grândola; the exit is number 09.
