The Atlantic coast is at the heart of any stay in Costa da Caparica. It comes into view on different scales: as a long, continuous sandy beach, as individual beach sections with named activities, and as part of a protected landscape. The traditional Arte-Xávega fishing technique and a cycling route add to the picture. You can consider whether the beach, water sports, coastal fishing or cycling best matches your travel interests before choosing a hotel for your stay.

Understanding the beach and protected area

A continuous sandy beach begins behind Vila Costa da Caparica and stretches for around 30 kilometres to Fonte da Telha. Most of the beach lies within the protected Arriba Fóssil landscape area. Classified in 1984, the Paisagem Protegida da Arriba Fóssil da Costa da Caparica extends for around 13 kilometres along the coast between the town of Costa da Caparica and Lagoa de Albufeira in the municipality of Sesimbra, and covers 1,599 hectares. The two distances refer to different reference points: around 30 kilometres describes the sandy beach as far as Fonte da Telha, while around 13 kilometres describes the protected coastal landscape between the town and the lagoon. This distinction is useful when choosing where to stay: the beach and the protected area are connected, but they are not equivalent measures.

Water sports at Praia da Mata

Surfing, bodyboarding and stand-up paddleboarding are among the water activities at Praia da Mata. Praia da Mata is a lifeguarded beach with a concession; beach operations may vary by season. The activities on offer may also vary seasonally. So if you are planning your trip around one of these sports, keep the time of year in mind.

Arte-Xávega and the fishing season

At the southern end of Praia de São João, you can watch Arte-Xávega in practice—a traditional fishing technique and an identity-defining tradition of Costa da Caparica. It is actively practised on the Atlantic beaches of Costa da Caparica by fishing groups from Costa da Caparica and Fonte da Telha. The practice is concentrated mainly between March and October, although some fishing groups now practise it year-round. The season therefore provides a general timeframe, but whether you can see it in practice still depends on the activity of the crew on a given day and on sea conditions.

Getting your bearings and cycling

The Costa da Caparica Tourist Office is located on the urban beachfront, making it a clearly identified point of reference for this part of town. Cycling adds another aspect to the beach and fishing themes: along the Frente Urbana de Praias on Av. General Humberto Delgado, the Costa-Atlântica cycling route includes a 4,100-metre cycle path. This gives the path a tangible scale; if cycling interests you, you can include it as a focus of your trip planning.
