Discover Pedreira
Accommodation in Pedreira
Pedreira combines more than 500 years of history with folkloric traditions, stone architecture and trails in the Vale do Nabão. The settlement already existed in 1530 under the name Casal do Arrife. This gives you a range of ways to shape your stay: historic buildings, regional culture and trails in the Vale do Nabão.
Landscape and Water
The Rio Nabão flows east of Pedreira. A stream rises at Casal da Azinheira, south of the settlement, and flows into the Nabão. At the Fonte do Caldeirão river bathing area, activities include swimming, sport fishing and walks. Conditions and access may change, so check locally before your visit.
History and Architecture
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora das Neves was rebuilt between 1777 and 1782 with public donations. The church contains two oil paintings on wood dating from the late 16th century. These dates refer to two distinct periods: the creation of the paintings and the later rebuilding of the church. Stone porches, columns, steps made from solid blocks of stone, and stone-clad walls are characteristic features of older buildings in Pedreira. Stonework from Pedreira also contributed to the architectural design of buildings in Tomar’s historic centre. The village primary school was built in 1930–1931 and is well preserved.
Folklore and Regional Culture
The Rancho Folclórico “Os Canteiros” da Pedreira began its folkloric activities on 19 August 1976. It represents the culture of northern Ribatejo, with influences from Beira Baixa and Alto Alentejo. The Federação do Folclore Português classifies the group as belonging to the Alto Ribatejo ethnographic area. Pedreira’s folklore festival takes place every year on the last weekend of June. If you plan to travel for the festival, confirm the specific dates locally before your trip.
Getting Around on Foot and by Bike
The Vale do Nabão project includes six mountain biking routes and two walking trails. The Vale do Nabão also has the region’s first homologated cycling routes, as well as a network of walking trails. These options offer a clear choice between cycling and walking. The Miradouro in Pedreira was built in 1928 and is a tourist attraction. It is located on the “Vale do Nabão” walking trail, linking a named viewpoint with the walking trail network. Check locally before your trip to see whether the routes you are interested in are available.
