Churches, springs, and local traditions shape Achete’s cultural heritage.

Churches, Azulejos, and Local Identity

The Igreja Paroquial de Santa Maria de Achete is a building of architectural interest in the seat of the civil parish. Its interior is entirely covered with 17th-century azulejos of the “PADRÃO” and “TAPETE” types. There is a sundial on the tower. The church thus draws attention to three specific features: its architecture, its all-over tile decoration, and the additional detail on the tower.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Aracela, also known as Senhora do Leite, is another prominent place of worship and is considered one of the most important symbols of Achete’s local identity. The related chapel is also commonly known by the name Aracoeli. The Rota das Fontes de Santa Maria passes by the chapel known as Nossa Senhora da Aracela. In the area of the União de Freguesias de Achete, Azoia de Baixo e Póvoa de Santarém, the Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Ara Coeli is also listed among properties and features of heritage interest.

Traditions and Customs Passed Down Through Generations

Chinquilho, also known as Jogo da Malha, is a traditional outdoor game played with iron discs and two pins or wooden pegs. The custom observed on the Day of Vera Cruz, May 3, had a different character: early in the morning, people made a cross from Maia flowers, broom, and other wildflowers, and placed it on the main door of the house. It was meant to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity to the harvests. Local tradition thus links a particular date with plants from the fields and a wish for protection and a good harvest.

Planning the Rota das Fontes

In the area of the União de Freguesias de Achete, Azoia de Baixo e Póvoa de Santarém, the Rota das Fontes project includes the Rota das Fontes de Santa Maria and the Rota das Fontes de Alexandre Herculano. The project also connects with the Caminhos de Fátima walking trail. For specific route planning, the Santa Maria route is easy to assess based on its stated length and format: it is a 19-kilometre circular route that starts and finishes at the Igreja de Santa Maria de Achete.

The Rota das Fontes de Santa Maria links historic springs and other points of interest across urban, wooded, and agricultural areas.

Springs and the Landscape of the Civil Parish

The Fonte das Almas is one of Achete’s springs singled out for its religious past or the properties of its water; it is also associated with a legend. The Fonte do Piúlho is another of these springs.

The civil parish of Achete lies 15 kilometres north of Santarém, on the right bank of the Tagus, in the area of Bairro. Its terrain includes hills, smaller elevations, and some plateaus. The civil parish is rural and predominantly agricultural. These details describe the wider administrative area and its landscape, not just the built-up area of Achete.

For a meal, a description from 2023 mentions O Panturras in Advagar, which serves traditional Portuguese cuisine and petiscos. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether the restaurant is currently open.
