Alvega brings together sacred architecture, stories passed down through generations and trails along the Tagus. When planning your stay, you can consider these highlights separately: would you like to visit churches and attend an annual pilgrimage, walk a clearly measured circular route, or consider activities on the river?

Churches and the Romaria

The Igreja Matriz de Alvega, also known as the Igreja Matriz de São Pedro, is a 17th-century church. Its features include a rose window and a side tower. A wall encloses the churchyard, where a tiled panel depicts an invocation of Saint Anthony. Its age, architectural style and features offer several specific points of interest if you are interested in sacred architecture.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia stands on a small hill on the south bank of the Tagus. This small Mannerist building is painted white, blue and yellow, has a circular ground plan and a domed roof. Its construction is probably dated to 1626 and attributed to Lourenço Godinho and Isabel Freire. The chapel is also associated with the Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Guia, held annually on Easter Monday. As the date depends on the Easter calendar, the pilgrimage does not fall on the same calendar date every year. If you are planning to travel specifically for the occasion, check the date for your travel year.

Historical traces in Alvega

Different historical clues relating to the Roman past should be distinguished. The possible location of the Roman town of Aritium Vetus is thought to be within the Freguesia of Alvega; its exact location remains uncertain. This theory refers to the Freguesia and not necessarily to the town of Alvega itself. According to tradition, a Roman military road from Lisbon to Mérida also passed through Alvega. Thus, an explicitly uncertain theory about the town's location sits alongside a traditional account of a road connection.

A description from 2016 mentions the Museu Barbisco in Alvega and a collection assembled by Raimundo Covas from his seafaring years connected with the Tagus and the sea. The collection included small boats, photographs and other objects; it was housed in his parents' home. This maritime collection adds a different perspective on the town's history alongside its churches and chapels.

Hiking and activities on the Tagus

The Rota de Abrantes is 91 km long, forms part of the Caminho do Médio Tejo and passes through Alvega. The Praia da Marambana circular hiking trail is listed as 9 km long, taking approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. It starts and ends at the Estação de Canoagem de Alvega and follows the Tagus through riverside vegetation, including willows, alders and poplars. These details reflect different planning scales: a long route and a circular hike with an approximate time range. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Estação de Canoagem de Alvega is on the Tagus and offers opportunities for canoeing and beach volleyball. If you are planning either activity, check the relevant operating arrangements in advance. Access is also a factor to consider when visiting the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia: a route description from 2020 mentions an unpaved road, crossing the railway line to the Pego power station, and then about 1,100 m to the chapel. The chapel is on private land. Check in advance whether a visit is possible and find out about the current condition of the route.
