Alpiarça lies in the vast Lezíria Plain of the Ribatejo. If you are looking for a hotel in Alpiarça, the area’s different themes can help you decide what you want to focus on during your trip. Wetland, water, a circular route, archaeology and a collection offer different perspectives. You can make your choice based on whether landscape, fishing or history is especially important to your stay.

Landscape and water

Paúl da Gouxa is a wetland with inland waters, fen, marshy willow stands and reeds; the habitat is in good condition. The area is also home to the largest population of the endemic Sorraia horse. Population levels may change. This distinguishes Paúl da Gouxa from the Albufeira dos Patudos: here, the focus is on different wetland habitats and the horse population, while there it is on a heavily modified body of water.

The Albufeira dos Patudos has a flooded area of about 11 ha and a shoreline of around 2,500 m. The area and shoreline provide different measures of the same body of water: the first figure describes its flooded extent, while the second describes the length of its shore. The Albufeira is designated for recreational and sport fishing. If you plan to fish there, check the current licensing requirements beforehand.

Circular route and history

The “Pela Reserva do Cavalo do Sorraia” circular route offers another perspective. It passes through Parque Verde do Carril and by Casa dos Patudos; the route returns to its starting point via the Patudos leisure complex. Unlike the Albufeira, which can be described by its fishing designation and water measurements, the circular route follows a path that connects several named places. Weather and land management can change local paths. If you plan to walk the route, check conditions before setting out.

Alto do Castelo is a fortified settlement with pre-Roman and Roman phases. Patacão was once a fishing village with wooden stilt houses built for winter floods; the buildings have fallen into disrepair. The histories of the two places have different emphases: a fortified settlement with several phases, and a style of construction designed for flooding.

Casa-Museu dos Patudos and regional themes

Casa-Museu dos Patudos was commissioned by José Relvas from the architect Raul Lino. Its collection of Arraiolos rugs is considered one of the largest in Portugal. The commission and the collection offer two distinct cultural themes: the first points to the origins of the house, the second to the size of the rug collection. If you are exploring Alpiarça through its cultural themes, you can consider its architectural history and collection separately.

Wine and agriculture are also regional themes. ALPIAGRA celebrates the region’s wine tradition and agricultural productivity. This adds an agricultural perspective alongside landscape, settlement history and the collection.
