Ervedal: Megaliths, Church Art and Traditions
Accommodation in Ervedal
Ervedal combines a landscape shaped by megaliths, church art and festive seasons that extend to the local cuisine. The town lies near the left bank of the Ribeira de Avis and along a road that connects it with the border with Monforte. If you are planning a stay, you can take your cue from the archaeological monuments, the history of the Igreja Paroquial or a specific date on the local calendar.
Megalithic Monuments and Landscape
Torre Ervedal 3, also known as Olival da Anta, sits on a rise at the edge of a gently undulating landscape with a notable concentration of megalithic tombs. Torre Ervedal 4 is another megalithic monument, situated on a raised rocky spur overlooking the Ribeira Grande. A third landmark is Torre do Ervedal 1, next to the waterline of the Maranhão Reservoir; high water levels can affect this monument. Ervedal’s megalithic heritage therefore encompasses both elevated locations and a connection to the reservoir’s waterline.
Igreja Paroquial and Historical Traces
The Igreja Paroquial dates from the 16th century and was formerly under the patronage of the Order of Avis. Its painted Baroque pediment displays the Cross of Avis in a medallion. The furnishings include a baldachin with gilded carving; the high altar also features well-preserved gilded carving in the classical style of the 17th century. The church thus brings together a historical connection to Avis and different expressions of gilded carving.
Another archaeological trace is a Roman bath visible in Ervedal. The Fundação Arquivo Paes Teles was established at the request of Mário Saa, who had expressed this wish in his 1967 will. Alongside the church, archaeological remains and institutional history are also among the themes that shape Ervedal.
Occasions and Dates
The Feira Franca de Ervedal is held annually on the third weekend of October. The Easter pilgrimage takes place on Easter Monday: the local population usually makes its way to Horta de Rosas, bringing roast lamb for a picnic. On 24 December, a bonfire is lit in the churchyard, where residents gather around it. The carnival parade passes through the streets of Ervedal on the Saturday before Carnival, with masked participants. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular occasion, check the exact date in advance.
Festive Pastries and Sausage-Making Tradition
The festive seasons also have their own culinary traditions: Costas are a traditional Easter pastry in Ervedal, while Filhós are a traditional Christmas pastry. Fumeiro da Vila makes Alentejo sausages by hand, curing them in a traditional smokehouse. Thus, pastries associated with particular festive seasons sit alongside a regional sausage-making tradition.
