Alpalhão brings together sacred architecture, local customs, museums and a granite landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Alpalhão, these themes can shape your stay: from historic churches and chapels to rock formations and a land art intervention. When planning your trip, it is also worth checking the dates of local festivals and traditions.

Churches, chapels and historic traces

The Capela do Calvário is a typical rural chapel of the Alto Alentejo, dating from the late 16th century. The Cruzeiro de Alpalhão is part of a Calvary ensemble beside a chapel dating from the 16th century. With five Stations of the Cross, the Procissão dos Passos proceeds between the Igreja Matriz and the Capela do Calvário. These buildings and the procession bring together sacred architecture and a long-standing religious tradition.

The Igreja Matriz de N. Senhora da Graça is thought to date from the early 17th century, but it was already mentioned in a register from 1511. The two dates refer to different historical evidence: the earlier mention and the building’s presumed date. Inside is a gilded Baroque high altar dating from the 18th century. The Igreja do Espírito Santo, also known as the Igreja da Misericórdia, has an apse dating from the late 14th century and a painted wooden altarpiece from the late 16th century depicting the Last Supper. This church also houses an image of Santiago Peregrino in Largo de São Tiago. Marcas de Cristianização can be seen on door and window frames in several streets of the old town.

The Torre do Relógio also offers several historical connections. The tower was built in the 18th century; its base is said to belong to a medieval castle wall built by D. Dinis in 1300. The mechanical clock is dated 1925 and continues to chime the hours. The Capela de São Pedro has a 16th-century Mannerist high altarpiece depicting the Virgin Mary and various saints. The Capela de São Sebastião is thought to date from the late 16th or early 17th century; its features include a vaulted apse and a granite pulpit.

Traditions with set dates

A São João tradition is associated with the Fonte de Baixo. On the night of 23–24 June, people drink the “new water” at midnight and wet the tips of their hair with it—according to traditional belief, this is supposed to make their hair grow. The fountain was built in the mid-18th century and later fitted with a washhouse.

A large pilgrimage takes place at the Capela de N. Sra. da Redonda on the two days after Easter. The festival at the Capela de São Pedro is associated with 28 and 29 June. At the Capela de São Sebastião, a procession on the Sunday after 20 January is among the local customs; the festivities also include an auction of food donations called “Ramos.”

Museums and ways of life in the past

The Museu da Misericórdia opened on 27 June 2004 to bring together religious objects from several buildings in one place. The Casa Museu offers a different perspective on the history of the area: the museum space presents a typical house in Alpalhão, along with objects and tools from everyday life in the past.

The Casa do Brinquedo is housed in the former prison building in Alpalhão. Its collection includes more than 200 old toys made of wire or stone, as well as cloth and porcelain dolls. While the Casa Museu focuses on domestic life, the Casa do Brinquedo lets visitors discover the variety of historic toys.

Granite formations and land art

Granite is a distinctive feature beyond architecture, too. The Focinho do Porco rock lies about 1.5 kilometres from Alpalhão; its shape resembles a pig’s snout. Cracks in the Cinco Dedos granite formation appear to outline five fingers. Azul de Alpalhão is considered a high-quality ornamental granite and is described as more than 300 million years old.

The Roteiro das Esculturas de Alpalhão includes a land art intervention created as part of the Bienal da Pedra. Geological formations and artistic design thus offer two distinct ways of experiencing granite. The Anta de N. Sra. da Redonda, also called the Anta do Vale Joanino, is another named destination in the area. It can be reached via the EM1004 towards the Capela de N. Sra. da Redonda, followed by a local road. Confirm the route of the local road before setting out.
