If you are planning a stay in Sao Jorge, you can choose from a range of interests: Baroque church art, historic mills, a lighthouse, a bathing complex, and hiking and mountain biking routes. These places and activities give you specific points of reference for planning your trip. The themes range from cultural and historical sites to trails with clearly stated distances and difficulty levels.

Baroque church and historic mills

The Igreja Matriz de São Jorge was built in the 17th century and is the largest Baroque church in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Its features include gilded Joanine-style Baroque wooden altars and paintings on canvas. The construction period and furnishings offer two different insights into the church: it was built in the 17th century, while the altars and paintings mentioned reflect its Baroque character.

Another historic point of interest is the Núcleo Primitivo de São Jorge. Its ruins include former sugar-cane mills, built at the beginning of the island’s settlement. Since 2003, the Núcleo has been classified as a monument of municipal interest. The site therefore represents the mills of an earlier period, while the Serragem da Achadinha and the Moinho de Água de São Jorge offer insights into milling technology that is still in use.

At the Serragem da Achadinha, visitors can observe the operation of the water-powered sawmill up close. It is the only water-powered sawmill still in operation in Madeira and has been considered a monument of local value by the Direção Regional dos Assuntos Culturais (DRAC) since 1998 because of its cultural and historical importance. The Moinho de Água de São Jorge has a history spanning more than 300 years. Visitors can also observe the mill in operation; wheat, corn, barley and rye grown on the agricultural terraces of São Jorge are still milled there. The difference is clear: the sawmill is the focus at the Serragem, while grain milling takes place at the Moinho.

Lighthouse, viewpoint and bathing complex

The Farol de São Jorge is 14 metres high and was put into operation in April 1959. Its height and commissioning date provide two simple points of reference: the figure describes the structure, while the date marks a historic step in its use. From the Miradouro do Pico, you can see rugged mountains covered in lush green forests and the Atlantic Ocean. If you want to include views and scenery in your choices, this viewpoint offers a different focus from the architectural and technical sites.

The Complexo Balnear do Calhau de São Jorge is located at the mouth of the Ribeira de São Jorge. The bathing complex includes a small beach and three swimming pools; it also provides access to a freshwater lagoon. This combination sets the site apart from the cultural and historical attractions: here, the beach, lagoon and pools take centre stage. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether you would rather focus on architectural history and milling technology or on the different bodies of water and pools.

Hiking and mountain biking

The PR 18 – Levada do Rei starts at the water treatment station in Quebradas, São Jorge. The moderately difficult hike is 5.3 kilometres long, with another 5.3 kilometres for the return journey. The estimated total duration is three hours and 30 minutes. The distance, return journey and estimated duration give you specific details to help plan time for a day of hiking.

Down - São Jorge is a different type of route: this mountain biking trail connects São Jorge with Arco de São Jorge, is 1.4 kilometres long and is rated very difficult. So the short distance does not mean the route is considered easy. By comparison, the PR 18 is described as a moderately difficult hike and covers a total of 10.6 kilometres there and back. These details help you distinguish between the two activities by mode of transport, distance and difficulty, without treating them as equivalent alternatives.

Sao Jorge offers a range of interests to choose from: church art and historic mills, a bathing complex with a beach, lagoon and pools, and trails for hiking or mountain biking. You can focus on the specific attractions that suit your stay.
