São Roque do Faial combines hiking trails, viewpoints and nature experiences with tangible cultural connections. When planning a hotel stay, it can be helpful to first decide what you would like to focus on: the hikes vary in difficulty and time required, while each viewpoint offers its own landscape. Other highlights include the Laurissilva, opportunities to observe Madeira’s wildlife and plant life, and local traditions.

Hiking trails and time required

The Levada de Baixo e Vereda do Lombo Grande route is moderately difficult. It is 3.8 km long, with another 3.8 km for the return journey. The stated duration is 3 hours and 30 minutes. The starting point and destination are at Residencial San Roque in São Roque do Faial. The Levada de Baixo section passes agricultural fields cultivated by local residents. From Lombo Grande, the route continues to the source of the Levada do Castelejo.

The Vereda dos Balcões offers a different time commitment: it is rated easy and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The hiking trail is 1.5 km long, with another 1.5 km for the return journey. It begins on the ER 103 in Ribeiro Frio and leads to the Balcões viewpoint. This makes it possible to compare a shorter, easy hike with the moderately difficult route, which takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. Route details and trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Ribeiro Frio and the Laurissilva

Ribeiro Frio lies in the heart of the Laurissilva forest. Several hiking trails begin in Ribeiro Frio and pass through the Santana Biosphere Reserve. Trails also start at the Ribeiro Frio viewpoint, including PR 10 Levada do Furado and PR 11 Vereda dos Balcões. The viewpoint is on the ER 103 in São Roque do Faial and offers views of the green mountains along Madeira’s north coast.

Parque Florestal do Ribeiro Frio offers opportunities to observe the wildlife and plant life characteristic of Madeira. Hikers on the Vereda dos Balcões may also encounter native and endemic species. The trail follows the Levada da Serra do Faial through the green Laurissilva forest. From the Balcões viewpoint, the view stretches across the Ribeira da Metade valley, in a landscape shaped by the Laurissilva. In good visibility, Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres, Pico Ruivo and Penha d'Águia can also be seen.

Panoramic views of Madeira’s north coast

The Lombo dos Palheiros viewpoint offers a panorama of Madeira’s north coast, with imposing mountains in the foreground. From there, you can also see the centre of the municipality of São Roque do Faial and Penha d'Águia. The Empenas viewpoint offers a different vista: from there, the view stretches across Madeira’s mountains, with the Atlantic Ocean in the background.

Empenas is accessible via the road to Achada do Teixeira, shortly after passing Picarouto. Together with the views from the Ribeiro Frio and Lombo dos Palheiros viewpoints, this spot showcases different landscapes of the north coast and mountain region. At Balcões, the named peaks and Penha d'Águia are visible only in good visibility.

Cultural heritage and regional traditions

Cedar wood from São Roque do Faial was used for the roof of Funchal Cathedral and the tabernacle of the church of São Jorge. A watermill still stands in Fajã do Cedro Gordo de Baixo, illustrating a social and cultural aspect of the area. As its structural condition may change, it is worth checking the latest information before visiting.

In June, the Feast of São João Batista is held in São Roque do Faial at the chapel of Achada do Cedro Gordo. Check the exact dates of the festivities before travelling. Alongside hiking and landscapes, local traditions and cultural history offer further points of interest during your stay.

São Roque do Faial in the Santana area

At the regional level, São Roque do Faial is one of the six municipalities in the Santana area. The hiking trails of the Santana Biosphere cover more than 120 km. This wider context complements the specific hiking options in São Roque do Faial with a regional perspective.
