Usseira – Aqueduct, Heritage and Festivals
Accommodation in Usseira
The Aqueduto da Usseira gives Usseira a tangible starting point for a trip focused on heritage and landscape. There is also a hiking route, a viewpoint and local festival traditions.
Aqueduct and hiking route
The Aqueduto da Usseira stretches for six kilometres, three of which run underground. It leads from the spring near Usseira to the Chafariz da Praça de Santa Maria in Óbidos. In this way, the structure connects the two named places along its entire length.
The Rota do Aqueduto is a separate 6.2-kilometre route. It passes the Mãe de Água at the beginning of the aqueduct and then follows the structure. The aqueduct’s six kilometres and the route’s 6.2 kilometres therefore refer to different lengths.
The route is listed as having 175 metres of elevation gain, a difficulty level of II and an estimated duration of two hours. This time estimate applies to the hiking route. It starts and ends beside the Junta de Freguesia in Usseira; the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário is also at the beginning and end of the route. Following old farm tracks, it offers views of the Vila de Óbidos, the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands.
Chapel and architectural heritage
The Capela de Santa Luzia contains a stone pulpit dating from the 17th century. According to tradition, it came from the Convento S. Miguel de Gaeiras. Its origin is therefore passed down as a traditional attribution. Windmills are also among Usseira’s notable architectural heritage features.
Talefe viewpoint
The Talefe viewpoint is near the washhouses, which were recently repaired and refurbished by the Junta de Freguesia. A mural honouring the washerwomen is located there. Check the condition of the site in person. From Talefe, the Serra dos Candeeiros can be seen in its entirety to the east. The viewpoint therefore adds another landscape view to the route, whose vistas take in Óbidos, the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands.
Festivals and local traditions
The Festa das Sopas is a recurring culinary event in Usseira. At its second edition, on 7 April 2024, more than a dozen different soups were available to sample. The specific date and offerings refer to that edition; they provide a glimpse of the event but do not indicate a current date.
The Festejos de Santa Luzia, held on the night of 12 to 13 December, include a bonfire and a shared dinner. The meal includes grilled meat, grilled sardines, bread and wine. The exact arrangements may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the current dates and specific arrangements in advance.
These themes offer different ways to plan your stay: the Rota do Aqueduto has specific details on its length and estimated duration, Talefe offers views of the Serra dos Candeeiros, and the festivals differ in date and tradition. This can help you decide whether to plan your stay around a hiking route, architectural heritage or a festival date.
