Reguengo do Fetal lies at the foot of the limestone massif of Serra de Aire e Candeeiros. Two themes stand out when planning a trip here: religious traditions and architectural history on the one hand, and a limestone landscape on the other. Processions, historic churches, and natural formations offer different ways to explore the area, allowing you to shape your stay around your interests.

Processions and Religious Buildings

The Procissão Noturna de Nossa Senhora do Fetal, also known as the Procissão dos Caracóis, takes place annually in Reguengo do Fetal. It is held over two Saturdays: on the last Saturday in September, the first nighttime procession goes from the Nossa Senhora do Fetal sanctuary to the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Church. On the first Saturday in October, the second procession follows the reverse route. The two dates and the change of direction provide a practical framework for planning if you want to include the procession in your trip. Check the date again before you leave.

The Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Church was built in 1512 at the behest of D. Pedro, Prior-Mor of Santa Cruz de Coimbra. Stone arches are among the surviving parts of its original structure. Its architecture combines Mannerist, Baroque, and Revivalist features. The year of construction and the stylistic classification complement each other: 1512 identifies the historic construction date, while the three stylistic features describe its architectural character.

The Nossa Senhora do Fetal sanctuary stands on a small hill and consists of an Ermida, the Casa dos Romeiros, and the Capela da Memória. Since 2002, it has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público, a Portuguese cultural property of public interest. The Ermida has its own building history within this complex: it was built in 1585 and covered with tiles from the Juncal factory at the end of the 18th century. The construction and the later tile covering thus belong to two different historical periods.

Limestone Landscape and Local Topics

The surrounding area has several rock outcrops and former quarries. It is part of the Maciço Calcário Estremenho and features strawberry trees. The history of the stone extracted here also extends beyond the local landscape: material from old quarries in the area was used to build the Mosteiro da Batalha and to restore it, particularly after the 1755 earthquake. In this way, the description of the rocks and quarries connects with the history of the monastery’s construction.

Buraco Roto is a necropolis cave. During the rainier months, it carries large volumes of water, forming a waterfall. Vale do Malhadouro is a place where rock climbing is practised. If climbing is one of your travel interests, it is another specific activity to consider when exploring Reguengo do Fetal.

Local cuisine also has its own event: in recent years, the Casa do Povo de Reguengo do Fetal organized a gastronomic weekend featuring regional specialities such as morcelas de vinha de alhos, tachadéu, bucho, and buzegos. The names of these dishes add a culinary dimension to the cultural and landscape themes.
