Avelar between local history and festive tradition
Accommodation in Avelar
Avelar: Local History and Architectural Features
The Pelourinho de Avelar stands at Largo 12 de Novembro, the site of the former square and the original town centre. Its history goes back to King Manuel I granting Avelar its new town charter in 1514. The square and the date provide two distinct points of reference: the Largo locates the original town centre, while the charter is the historical reference associated with the pillory.
Churches and Inscription
The inscription “AD 1767” is on the façade of the present-day Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Guia in Avelar. The Igreja Matriz de Avelar features neoclassical design, a rectangular floor plan and a single nave. The inscription provides a chronological reference, while the style, floor plan and nave describe the architectural form of the Igreja Matriz. The dates 1514 and AD 1767 represent different historical points of reference: the granting of a town charter and an inscription on a church façade.
The Forno Medieval da Senhora da Guia
At the Forno Medieval da Senhora da Guia, the exterior architecture is paired with a clearly described layout. The oven has a hexagonal floor plan, white-painted façades and a domed roof topped with a Latin cross and decorative pinnacles. From the floor plan and exterior walls to the roof’s crowning features, several design details are specified. Access is via a staircase with 16 steps; the oven stands on a platform surrounded by iron chains in a garden. The oven’s architectural form and its setting within the garden can therefore be considered as two separate aspects.
Festive Tradition in September
The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Guia takes place every year on the first Sunday in September and the two preceding days. The nocturnal Procissão das Velas takes place on the first day of the festival. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, you can use its recurring timeframe to help plan and check the specific event dates in advance. The Festa da Senhora da Guia do Avelar was classified as intangible cultural heritage of the Centro Region by the regional cultural authority at the time. The historical festive tradition also included baking a ceremonial cake in the long-heated Forno Medieval da Senhora da Guia; the following day, the cake was distributed among the pilgrims. The festival dates and the cake ritual show two different aspects of the celebration: its annual schedule and its historical religious tradition.
Hiking Route Starting in the Town Centre
The PR5 ANS – Rota das Vilas begins at Praça Costa Rego in the centre of Avelar and is 14.3 km long. The starting point and route length give you concrete details for planning a hike. Different interests therefore have different reference points: Largo 12 de Novembro for the historic town centre, and Praça Costa Rego as the route’s starting point. As operating status may change, check whether the route is currently accessible before setting out.
