Seia: Trails, Water and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Seia
The municipality of Seia lies on the western slope of the Serra da Estrela massif, covers 26 percent of the area of the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela and reaches as far as Torre, the highest point of the massif. Mountains, valleys, plateaus and lowlands shape the area, creating a varied landscape. Visitors planning a stay in Seia can combine nature, trails, water and culture in different ways.
Landscape, Water and Trails
Lagoa Comprida is the largest lake in the Serra da Estrela highlands and its main water reservoir. The waterways and valleys also tell the story of how the landscape was formed: Praia Fluvial de Loriga lies in a glacial valley created by the glacier that formed the Vale de Loriga. Praia Fluvial da Lapa dos Dinheiros has clear water for swimming and is designated as an accessible beach. Seasonal services may vary. From there, a footpath leads to Buraco da Moura and a viewpoint overlooking the Caniça waterfalls.
The Rota do Rio Seia is 15.6 kilometers long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. It starts in the center of Seia, links the villages of Santiago, Folgosa do Salvador, Santa Comba, Sameice and Pereiro, which have historical ties to the river, and ends in the village of Vila Verde. The Caminhos de Montanha in the Seia area, meanwhile, comprise approximately 100 kilometers of hiking trails and 150 kilometers of cycling routes with varying elevation profiles. For a circular route at Lagoa Comprida, the Caminhos dos Conchos starts and ends beside the sales kiosk.
These details describe different ways of navigating the area: the Rota do Rio Seia has a stated route length, while the Caminhos de Montanha comprise a larger network with separate figures for walking and cycling routes. Visitors interested in wildlife and plant life can also enjoy birdwatching, hiking routes and snowshoe hikes at CISE. Offerings may vary by season.
Nature and Cultural Heritage
At CISE, the fauna, flora and geology of the Serra da Estrela are presented in an interactive permanent exhibition and through virtual reality. The Museu Natural da Eletricidade offers a different way to explore the landscape. It is housed in the former Central da Senhora do Desterro, considered one of Portugal’s oldest hydroelectric power plants. The museum’s educational offerings include guided tours and trails through Mata do Desterro.
The other museums each have their own focus. The Museu do Brinquedo de Seia displays around 10,000 toys from Portugal and around the world. The Museu do Pão offers a multisensory experience centered on Portugal’s bread heritage. The Centro Interpretativo da Ovelha Serra da Estrela explores wool, milk, pastureland and the work of shepherds across three floors. The center is housed in an 18th-century building that once served as the town hall, a prison and a courthouse. The Centro Interpretativo de Seia is located in an annex of the 16th-century Manueline Solar dos Botelhos.
Historical sites include religious buildings and archaeological remains. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Desterro comprises ten chapels dedicated to scenes from the life and Passion of Christ and to the mysteries of the Rosary. Construction of the Nossa Senhora do Desterro chapel began in the mid-17th century. The original Capela de São Pedro in Seia is thought to date from the late 12th or early 13th century; it was rebuilt in 1542 on the orders of Aires Botelho. Castro de São Romão is a settlement from the Late Bronze Age associated with the Baiões/Santa Luzia cultural group.
Regional Specialties and Travel Planning
Local food culture is also part of the region’s character. Queijo Serra da Estrela and RequeijĂŁo de Seia are mountain specialties, as is Bolo Negro de Loriga in the Seia area. Rotas da Eletricidade organizes group visits to businesses producing wool, textiles, dairy products and leather goods, which have shaped the centuries-old industry of Seia and the Serra da Estrela. A visit to LacticĂnios Correia & Barreiras in Santa Eulália may include a tasting of the cheeses made there.
Seia is mainly accessed via National Roads 17 and 231, which provide connections to the A25, A24 and IP3. When choosing a hotel, it may help to first consider your planned activities: the Rota do Rio Seia starts in the town center, while the Caminhos dos Conchos starts and ends at Lagoa Comprida.
