If you want to combine hiking and local history when choosing a destination, Folgosinho offers several themes: trails with historical connections, landscape features, and architectural and cultural heritage. One specific example is the Rota dos Galhardos, an 11-kilometre circular trail classified as a Pequena Rota (PR) in the municipality of Folgosinho and the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.

Hiking Trails and Historic Calçadas

The Rota dos Galhardos follows the Roman and medieval Calçadas of Folgosinho into the higher mountain area. It also includes a section of the GR-22 between Portela de Folgosinho and Pedra Furada. The route thus combines a circular trail with historic cobbled paths and part of a long-distance route.

Another type of excursion is the traditional pilgrimage route from Folgosinho to the Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Assedace. It is about 9 kilometres long and is offered as a guided experience that interprets the landscape. Compared with the 11-kilometre circular trail, it is shorter and focuses on the pilgrimage route. If you are planning to take part in an organised excursion, check the specific dates in advance.

The Casais de Folgosinho also offer their own landscape features: forest tracks lead to much of the Casais and are walked by hikers for their expansive views. The Casais lie to the south and east, on both slopes of the Mondego, where clear streams irrigate the pastures. Forest tracks with scenic views thus offer a different hiking theme from the historic Calçadas of the Rota dos Galhardos.

Rock Formations and Views

The Castelo de Folgosinho, built entirely of pinkish-white quartz, dominates the Mondego Valley and crowns one of Portugal’s largest quartzite formations. Its structure was built in the 1940s. From the Castelo, you can enjoy views of Folgosinho and the valley, which has been carved out by a clear stream. Here, the views and distinctive geological formation meet a building history with a specific date.

Another geological feature is Cabeça do Faraó, a natural granite outcrop. Erosion has shaped it to resemble the profile of a human head. In Casais de Folgosinho, the chapel of Nossa Senhora de Assedace also stands at an altitude of 935 metres; it is a place of devotion and pilgrimage. The necropolis of Casal das Pias in Folgosinho lies at an altitude of 1,098 metres and is associated with five tombs carved into the rock.

History and Religious Traditions

Sancho I granted Folgosinho a charter in 1187, which D. Afonso II confirmed in 1217. Among the town’s notable buildings is the Igreja Matriz de Folgosinho. Other historical features include traces of a synagogue, Manueline windows, and a Roman cobbled road. In Folgosinho’s square, the Fonte de Pedrão features sculptures and azulejo tilework.

The Casa de Viriato stands at the entrance to Folgosinho. According to local legend, it is connected to a former residence of Viriato. Pedra Furada is a large boulder at the upper end of the Calçada da Serra de Baixo. It, too, is linked to a local legend, according to which the Moors tied up their horses there.

The Romaria de Nossa Senhora de Assedace is an annual festival connected with transhumance, combining religious and secular elements. Dates and arrangements can change; check them if you are planning to attend the celebration. Another festival in honour of Nossa Senhora do Socorro is celebrated on the first Sunday in September at the Igreja Matriz. The exact programme may vary there, too.

Local Produce and Gastronomy

Folgosinho’s handcrafted products include sheep’s cheese, Requeijões, and Queijetas. Local dishes include Chanfana and oven-roasted goat. Traditional crafts include embroidered shepherds’ sweaters and waistcoats, cloaks, and Safões. These products and garments add local culinary and textile traditions to the hiking and history themes.
