Celorico Da Beira: Cheese Culture and History
Accommodation in Celorico Da Beira
Celorico Da Beira combines the cheese-making tradition of Queijo Serra da Estrela with historic architecture and a distinctive setting by the Mondego. When looking for a hotel, this mix of themes can help you choose what to focus on during your stay: local history, cheese culture or routes through the landscape. The village lies on the northern side of the Serra da Estrela, on a granite spur above the Rio Mondego valley, at an altitude of around 550 metres.
Landscape between the Mondego and Serra da Estrela
The town and river can be understood on different geographic scales: the Rio Mondego runs through the municipality of Celorico da Beira for 22 kilometres from east to west. To the south of the town lies the Serra do Ralo, a ridge on the western foothills of the Serra da Estrela. These geographical features give the destination a clear setting without conflating the town with the wider municipality.
The Estação Arqueológica de São Gens is situated on flat ground with gentle slopes, at the confluence of the Ribeira dos Tamanhos and the Rio Mondego. Its location therefore combines a specific terrain with the river, which also shapes the wider geographic setting.
Queijo Serra da Estrela and local tradition
The municipality of Celorico da Beira is the designated production area for Queijo Serra da Estrela and is known as its capital. The Solar do Queijo Serra da Estrela was built in the 18th century and converted into a museum in 1998, documenting cheese production. Visits with tastings are offered; check availability before your trip.
The Solar do Queijo Serra da Estrela is open daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit, as they may change. The Museu do Agricultor e do Queijo houses more than 2,000 objects and opened in November 2002 in a restored former agricultural quinta.
The Feira Anual do Queijo is also part of the municipality’s cheese-making tradition. It is the municipality’s most important event and features more than 100 exhibitors. The focus is on matured sheep’s cheese and Queijo Serra da Estrela. The fair takes place every year, but the dates vary; if you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the relevant year.
Historic centre and architecture
The historic centre of Celorico da Beira includes the castle, clock tower and churches, as well as the Solar do Queijo Serra da Estrela. It also features coat-of-arms houses, artistic details on façades and old lanes. Different aspects of architectural and local history can therefore be found side by side within the centre.
Linhares da Beira is also a medieval village dating from the 12th century, with architecture and art reflecting several periods. The Igreja de Santa Maria contains 17th-century tiles. These details give travellers interested in culture specific points of reference for exploring historic buildings and interiors.
