Castelo Mendo is a fortified settlement. From here, the landscape stretches across the Ribeira dos Cadelos to the River CĂ´a at Porto de S. Miguel. Its elevated position and expansive landscape frame a fortified settlement whose gates, churches and historic paths reveal different aspects of its history. When planning your trip, you can focus on its fortifications, church interiors or the paths around the village.

A fortified settlement and distinctive landmarks

Porta da Vila is the main entrance to the fortified settlement. Two towers flank the gate; outside the towers stand two zoomorphic Vetton sculptures known as berrões. The first castle of Castelo Mendo is thought to date to the late 12th century. The ruins of the Torre de Menagem remain to the west.

Another structure makes its own impression: At seven metres tall, the Pelourinho is considered one of the tallest in Beira Interior. It was built around 1510 as a cage pillory. Its octagonal platform is topped by an octagonal column. Its dimensions and shape give the monument a clear, distinctive form among the village’s historic structures.

Two churches, different historical periods

Igreja de SĂŁo Vicente, also called Igreja da MisericĂłrdia, dates back to the 13th century and has Romanesque origins. Inside, it preserves a wooden Alfarge ceiling, old tomb slabs and a chalice-shaped baptismal font. Here, the history of the church building sits alongside several specific features of its interior.

Igreja de São Pedro offers a different historical perspective: it has been documented since 1321 and is closely linked to the urban expansion of Castelo Mendo’s new castle courtyard. Its single-nave layout, wooden false barrel vault and gilded wooden altarpieces shape the description of its interior. By comparison, São Vicente is distinguished above all by its 13th-century origins and its preserved tomb and baptismal features.

Landscape, exhibition and historical tradition

The views and historic paths also connect the village with its surroundings. The descent from Castelo Mendo to Porto de S. Miguel follows a path where medieval paving has been preserved. The sculpture Menda is set into the wall of Casa da Menda, a former hayloft.

A municipal notice dated 6 June 2023 mentions a permanent exhibition entitled “O Mundo Rural e a Arte Sacra” at the Castelo Mendo tourist office. Check before your visit whether the exhibition is currently open. The village’s history also includes a free fair established by its medieval charter. It was held three times a year—at Easter and for the feasts of São João and São Miguel—and each fair lasted eight days.
