Redondo between pottery and wine

Redondo combines traditional pottery with the wine culture of the Alentejo. If you are considering the town as a destination for a hotel stay, you can plan around different interests: ceramics and rural collections, wine tradition, historic festivals or landscapes. Redondo is known in Portugal for its wine production and is one of the regions with Denominação de Origem Controlada (D.O.C.).

Pottery and the Museu do Barro

Traditional pottery in Redondo includes both functional and decorative ceramics; several pottery workshops in the town keep the craft alive. Their products range from simple earthenware to pieces decorated with floral motifs or folk scenes of rural life. The Museu do Barro opened in 2009 to preserve and revive Redondo’s traditional pottery. It presents the historical development of the craft and displays representative pieces made using different techniques for working with clay, which can also be purchased there. The combination of historical development and selected pieces illustrates two distinct aspects: how pottery evolved and how different clay-working techniques are expressed in finished objects.

Wine culture at the museum and enoteca

The Museu Regional do Vinho de Redondo opened to the public in September 2001 and is dedicated to the Alentejo’s winegrowing tradition. Its permanent exhibition includes agricultural tools, as well as objects, images and texts about the art of winemaking. The collection therefore focuses not only on wine, but also on agricultural tools and the presentation of winemaking knowledge.

A municipal description from March 2021 also mentions a multimedia kiosk with information about the museum, the region’s wineries and various activities related to winegrowing. A November 2021 description of the enoteca presents it as a cultural venue for wine tastings in the historic centre. It lists wines from the Alentejo, regional cheeses, cured meats and Alentejo bread, served in traditional pottery.

Collections, Misericórdia and Carnival

The Núcleo de Arte Pastoril – Coleção António Carmelo Aires displays dozens of objects from rural life. They are made of cork, horn, wood, leather, reeds and textiles, and date from the 19th century to the 1960s. The variety of materials gives the collection a distinctive focus. Unlike the Museu do Barro, which explores pottery in Redondo, this Núcleo brings together objects from rural life made from a range of materials.

The history of the Misericórdia in Redondo dates back to a hostel founded in 1443 by Catarina Pires Folgada, widow of Vicente Anes Colombo. In 1521, the institution was formally established by an Alvará issued by D. Manuel. Carnival in Redondo dates back to the first half of the 20th century and was originally known as Festa das Flores. Its defining features included a large-scale parade and the Batalha das Flores.

Nature at Parque Ambiental de Redondo

Parque Ambiental de Redondo is situated by a stream and features dense vegetation and a large body of water. Its facilities include a multi-purpose sports court, a picnic area, several walking trails and fitness equipment. The park thus brings together different options for sports, picnics and walks in green surroundings.

The park is also intended to introduce visitors to the biodiversity found throughout the municipality. Its focus therefore extends beyond the vegetation and body of water within the park itself to the diversity of the municipality as a whole.
