Granja is a riverside settlement on Alqueva, situated on an arm of the reservoir, the Ribeira de Alcarrache. In general, the Alqueva Reservoir offers visitors a tranquil, newly created waterscape, full of life.

Churches between architectural history and art

The Igreja Matriz da Granja was built in the 16th century as a rectangular church with a wide nave. Inside are paintings of great interest. The rectangular layout and wide nave describe its spatial design; the paintings add an aspect of interior decoration. This allows the Matriz’s architectural form and pictorial decoration to be considered separately, without conflating the two features.

The Igreja de São Brás in Granja dates back to an earlier period: it was built in the 14th century. Its historical affiliation also changed. It first belonged to the Hospitallers of St John of Acre, and later passed to the Order of Avis. Compared with the Matriz, which dates from the 16th century, São Brás is the older of the two churches; its history is also shaped by the succession of these two affiliations.

The dating of the Igreja da Misericórdia da Granja is explicitly less certain: it probably dates from the late 16th century and features the simple lines of regional vernacular architecture. It thus adds a building described in architecturally restrained terms to the other two churches; chronologically, it probably belongs to the same century as the Matriz.

For a chronological comparison, São Brás’s 14th-century date and the Matriz’s 16th-century date provide clear reference points; the Misericórdia is probably dated to the late 16th century. The timeframe therefore ranges from the 14th century to a probable late-16th-century date.

Museums and local heritage

The Museu Etnográfico opened in 2013 to preserve and protect Granja’s cultural heritage. Residents donated valuable personal items so that the museum could preserve the past of the people of Granja. These donations place the residents themselves at the center: here, personal items and the people’s cultural heritage provide a way into local history.

The Museu da Adega Cooperativa de Granja preserves the history and memories of wine and olive oil production in the demarcated wine region of Alentejo. This brings olive oil into view alongside wine as part of the region’s production history. This subject area differs from the personal local history of the Museu Etnográfico: here, the focus is on two branches of production and their memory, while there it is on the cultural heritage and past of Granja’s residents.
